Our college interns will play a pivotal role in helping us achieve our vision.
MAJOR FUNCTIONSThe College intern will be responsible for coordinating activities during and for the After school Program. The main objective of the program is to improve student’s math, reading and writing skills; however, students are also assisted in other subject areas. The college intern will also serve as a mentor to the youth in our program. We consider their role as mentors invaluable.
Most of our youth do not have parents or family members who are pursuing or have pursued higher education; our college intern may provide the needed spark to inspire them to want to aim for higher education.
- Assist our staff in developing individual education plans for students and groups students into collaborative learning teams.
- Tutor kids with their homework and other school projects.
- Facilitate creative programs that foster mindfulness, social emotional learning etc.
- Interns are encouraged to draft their own ideas for creative classes that develop academic, teamwork, artistic and social skills in youth.
- Mentor grades 1st – 12th in social and emotional development.
- Accompany and supervise kids in outside activities including sports and playground games.
- Must Pass CORI/SORI screening.
Although the position is unpaid, many assistants have found success in transferring the hours into college credits, or in completing volunteer/internship requirements related to a degree.
Some educational institutions require prior approval before the start of an internship for academic credit. It is the responsibility of the student to check with their institution to be sure they meet any requirements before they accept a position.
