Job Description & How to Apply Below

Review of applications begins March 17, 2026.

The Boston College International Studies (IS) Program invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor in the International Studies Program, with expertise in political, cultural, or environmental geography. The specific area of expertise is open, but it should be international or global in scope and centered outside the United States. We seek a candidate who can contribute to the IS Program and the Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences by providing excellent teaching informed by scholarship, and engaged advising/mentoring to the diverse students in the IS Program.

This is a full-time, non-tenure-track position with an initial appointment for the 2026-27 academic year, with the possibility of renewal for two additional academic years. Teaching load will be two courses per semester during the academic year. The expected 9-month salary range (paid over 12 months) for this position is $80,000 - $85,000. The actual pay offered to the selected candidate will depend on factors such as, but not limited to, candidate qualifications and prior experience, scope of responsibilities, internal equity, and market considerations.

One of the core responsibilities will be to teach our introductory course “Where on Earth:
Foundations in Political Geography and Global Cultures” in the Fall semester. The course is required of all 105 sophomore IS majors; it is paired with “Where on Earth:
Foundations in Global History,” taught by a colleague in the History Department. Other undergraduate courses will be determined in consultation with the IS Program director, but will likely include research methods and two elective courses in your field of speciality. The faculty member will also advise undergraduate majors, and, if appropriate, supervise one or two IS senior thesis projects.

About the International Studies Program

See the IS Program website for more information about curricula, faculty, and campus activities.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in geography or related field is required and must be conferred before August 1, 2026. Candidates must show evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching.

Application Instructions

Applicants must submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, at least two letters of reference, a teaching statement (describing your teaching approach and experience), and syllabi from courses taught and/or proposed, via Interfolio () by March 17, 2026. After an initial review, selected candidates will be asked to submit evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching. Interviews will be conducted via video conference.
