Buckingham Browne & Nichols School is seeking a full‑time Middle School English teacher for a one‑year leave. The Middle School consists of Grades 7 and 8. We are seeking a knowledgeable English teacher to teach three classes across both grades, who values student voice and agency, utilizes a variety of pedagogical approaches, and is excited to work as part of a team in curriculum development.
Other faculty member responsibilities encompass advising in our co‑curricular advisory program, athletic/coaching, as well as community/student life activities, and other program needs.
- Planning and developing an engaging, age‑appropriate course of study in the classroom, adhering to educational best practices and curriculum guidelines.
- Preparing materials for lessons, assignments, and tests; evaluating, correcting, and grading student performance.
- Supervising the behavior of students in the classroom, school grounds, and educational trips, and discussing academic difficulties or behavioral challenges with students as they arise.
- Monitoring students’ progress throughout the year.
- Communicating progress and concerns with tact and professionalism to parents and, as appropriate, other faculty, staff, and campus leadership.
- Building and maintaining positive relationships with parents, students, and colleagues.
- Enforcing safety and security standards for students, staff, and visitors.
- Maintaining required paperwork for individual student files, attendance and incident reports, and other necessary records.
- Monitoring halls, study periods, and lunch with other faculty and staff.
- Participating in faculty meetings, educational conferences, in‑service opportunities, workshops, and other training seminars.
- Maintaining knowledge of research, developments, and best practices.
- Performing related tasks such as sponsoring student activities or organizations, including athletics.
- Other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have a degree in English or a related field. A Bachelor’s degree is required. While a Master’s Degree in English and at least four years of experience teaching English at the middle school level are preferred, we understand that not every great teacher’s path to teaching is linear.
