Longy’s Library Director position offers an exciting opportunity to play a key leadership role for the library and library services, supporting a diverse and rapidly growing student body at a school reimagining conservatory education. It will require creativity and imagination in collaboration with our senior leadership. The services and support offered to our community include multi-use educational and artistic space, in-person and online programming, tutoring, and access to technology.
The Library also serves a key role in Longy’s diversity in repertoire initiative, helping faculty and students find, study, and perform music from People of Color, LGBTQIA+, women, and living composers.
The Library Director oversees all functions of the Bakalar Library and library services s person supports Longy's mission to prepare musicians to make a difference in the world through programming, curation of new collections, and support for Longy's in-person and online degrees. This position offers the right candidate an opportunity to modernize Longy’s library and be an active educator who impacts our students’ academic and artistic experience.
ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership
- Ensure the library’s collections serve Longy’s performers, composers, and music educators in moving beyond classical music as it is traditionally imagined.
- Support a diverse student population by curating a diverse collection of music (composers, eras, types of instruments, styles of music) and research resources and materials.
- Work across Longy’s staff and faculty departments to lead the use of the library's physical space as a multi-use space including areas for study, meetings, social interaction, and concerts.
- Ensure access to the library's collections and maintain online databases and resources including monitoring and updating the content of the Library website.
- Share Longy’s collections and library programming regularly with the faculty and student communities.
- Expand the library's programmatic offerings to include educational workshops and tutoring services for professional development.
- Assist and advise faculty who use digital learning platforms in designing online course content.
- Support strategic initiatives including the development of non-degree programs, an artist residency program, music and health care, and teacher education, especially focusing on culturally responsive teaching practices.
- Support the curriculum and curricular innovation in Longy’s degree and non-degree programs.
- Remain up to date on industry trends (both library and conservatory curriculum) to drive innovations in programs, resources, and policies.
- Provide timely and accurate assistance to students and faculty including facilitating interlibrary loan options.
- Set and enforce library policies.
- Recruit, train, and supervise on-campus student employees as library assistants.
- Prepare annual operating and capital expenditure budgets for the Library.
- Create and recommend long-range plans for library equipment, operational needs, and desired services.
- Provide research for Senior leadership and program managers.
- Serve on committees as needed.
- Serve as the archivist and historian for Longy’s rich archive of materials.
- Rent and purchase materials as needed for academic courses, orchestra, opera, and choral activities.
- Catalog and classify items for the library’s collection. Develop and maintain cataloging procedures to facilitate effective and efficient cataloging workflow, quality control, and database management practices.
- Provide bibliographic instructions by appointment and in formal classroom settings.
- Oversee the conservation of the collection through a regular program of maintenance, repair, and binding of materials.
