System Chief Medical Officer – Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH)

Position Summary:

Beth Israel Lahey Health seeks a System Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to provide enterprise leadership for clinical excellence, quality, safety, and performance across a large, complex academic and integrated health system. As a member of the senior leadership team, the CMO will set and execute the systemwide clinical strategy, drive measurable improvements in outcomes and patient experience, and strengthen a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and innovation.

This highly visible role partners closely with hospital and physician leaders to align performance across inpatient and outpatient settings, reduce unwarranted variation, and ensure consistent, high-reliability care delivery across the system.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead systemwide strategy for clinical quality, safety, patient experience, and performance improvement.
  • Drive enterprise alignment and integration of medical staff affairs, credentialing, peer review, and clinical governance.
  • Establish and oversee clinical performance metrics, analytics, and external reporting to regulatory and accrediting bodies.
  • Build and lead a multidisciplinary clinical improvement infrastructure that transcends organizational boundaries.
  • Advance a culture of clinical excellence, learning, and accountability using LEAN, Six Sigma, and evidence-based improvement methods.
  • Foster innovation in care delivery, including new models and strategic partnerships that improve outcomes, value, and experience.
  • Serve as a senior spokesperson and external representative for BILH on matters of clinical performance and medical affairs.
  • Partner with the Board of Directors and executive leadership to develop and execute a 3–5-year strategy for clinical and operational excellence.
Required Qualifications
  • D. or equivalent degree with board certification required.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice medicine in Massachusetts.
Experience
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive physician leadership experience, including at least 10 years leading quality, safety, and clinical performance initiatives in a large academic medical center or integrated delivery system.
  • Demonstrated success driving enterprise-wide change, improving outcomes, and reducing variation across inpatient and outpatient care.
  • Academic leadership experience strongly preferred, with a national reputation and record of scholarship in quality, safety, or clinical performance improvement.
Pay Range

$ USD – $ USD. The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation may be determined based on several factors, that may include education, training, relevant experience, specialty, geography of work location, productivity, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.

In addition to base compensation, this position may be eligible for performance-based incentive compensation, which may include productivity and quality bonuses.
