This highly visible role blends scientific expertise, external leadership, and strategic influence across the cardiology landscape.

Approximately 60% of the role is externally facing, engaging Tier 1 cardiologists, centers of excellence, and key professional societies to elevate scientific exchange and partnership. The remaining 40% focuses on internal collaboration—providing SME input into KOL strategy, evidence generation, medical education, and patient advocacy initiatives, as well as serving as a senior trainer and strategic advisor for field medical teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead U.S. cardiology expert within Medical Affairs, representing Alnylam across Tier 1 KOLs, amyloidosis centers, and national cardiology societies (AHA, ACC, HFSA).
  • Lead executive-level scientific discussions to advance disease awareness, diagnostics, and treatment optimization.
  • Build and sustain deep, trust-based relationships with key external experts to inform strategy and identify collaboration opportunities.
  • Represent Alnylam Medical Affairs at major scientific meetings, symposia, and advisory boards.
  • Partner with field medical leadership to shape KOL mapping, segmentation, and engagement strategy, ensuring alignment and execution excellence.
  • Generate actionable scientific and clinical insights from external engagements and ensure integration into broader U.S. Medical Affairs insight and strategy processes.
  • Operate as a senior individual contributor, leading scientific strategy and cross-functional partnerships without formal people-management responsibilities.

Internal Strategy, Evidence & Field Enablement (40%)

  • Act as the cardiology SME contributing to U.S. medical strategy, evidence generation priorities, and the broader scientific platform for ATTR.
  • Provide SME input into cross-functional initiatives, collaborating closely with Clinical Development, HEOR, Payer Medical, and Patient Advocacy.
  • Support evidence generation and ISR strategies, including protocol input, data interpretation, and scientific dissemination.
  • Deliver advanced cardiology and amyloidosis training for field medical teams to elevate scientific capabilities and ensure consistency in engagement.
  • Ensure alignment of insights, field strategy, and scientific priorities across the Medical Affairs organization.
  • Uphold the highest standards of scientific integrity, compliance, and ethical governance across all medical activities.
Key Deliverables & Success Indicators
  • Strong and sustained relationships with national cardiology leaders and centers of excellence.
  • Measurable impact on disease education, diagnostic awareness, and scientific engagement.
  • Integration of cardiology insights into medical strategy, evidence planning, and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Enhanced scientific capabilities and quality of field medical interactions.
  • Prominent presence and influence at key cardiology congresses and professional forums.
  • Full adherence to medical governance and compliance standards.
Qualifications
  • MD or DO, Board-Certified Cardiologist required (Advanced Heart Failure or Amyloidosis specialization strongly preferred).
  • 8-10+ years of combined clinical and medical affairs experience, with 3 years in an industry medical or strategy role.
  • Deep understanding of the U.S. cardiology and rare disease landscape.
  • Demonstrated success in engaging Tier 1 KOLs and external thought leaders at the national level.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and ability to influence without authority.
  • Exceptional communication, executive presence, and data storytelling skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-accountability environment.
