What You Will Do:

The Powerline Technician Co‑op student is responsible for assisting with the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground powerlines and related equipment in accordance with established safety procedures and best practices. The incumbent works collaboratively as part of a crew to complete assigned tasks efficiently and in compliance with company standards.

  • Assist in the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems.
  • Support line crews in installing, testing, and maintaining powerlines, transformers, poles, and related equipment.
  • Participate in job planning activities, including completing tailboards, to assess hazards and coordinate tasks.
  • Set up appropriate work area protection in compliance with safety standards.
  • Safely operate and maintain motorized vehicles and equipment such as bucket trucks, radial boom derricks, aerial devices, portable generators, power saws, and drills. [BH1]
  • Conduct pre‑trip inspections of vehicles and equipment to ensure operational readiness and safety compliance.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with customers and the public.
  • Maintain a basic awareness/understanding of, and adhere to, all applicable safety legislation, Electrical Utility Safety Rules (EUSR), and Grand Bridge policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Participate in routine inspections and report issues or hazards.
  • Perform and work towards becoming proficient at tasks identified in the Vestibule and Level 1 sections of the Powerline Technician Trade Skills Logbook.
What You Will Bring
  • Enrollment in a Powerline Technician college program.
  • Eligible for a co‑op term through your institution.
  • Registered with Skilled Trades Ontario as an Apprentice Powerline Technician. The Apprentice must bring his/her copy of the STO Training Agreement and Trade Skills Logbook.
  • Successful completion of the MEARIE Powerline Technician training course, Level 1. [BH1]
  • Must be able to perform the duties of the job including manual labour, work in underground vaults and physically able to climb poles and work at heights.
  • Class ‘G’ driver’s license in good standing. Preference will be given to those with a DZ license.
  • The successful candidate will be required to bring their own personal tools, climbing belt and spurs, orange clothing and safety footwear.
