ROLE

SUMMARY:

Plan, organize, direct and control the activities of a group of Controls Engineering Designers who produce complete controls solutions and electrical design packages based on customer specifications and standardized design practices used s includes ensuring the quality and content of the deliverables generated by the group.

Responsibilities include:

  • General supervision, training, and guidance of all CE Hardware Designers that are part of his/her team.
  • Collaborates with Service Applications Engineering team in support of proposals and owns the jobs won from concept to through-life support.
  • With the help of Technical Service Manager plan to achieve budgets or to be under budget in total labor hours.
  • With the help of Technical Service Manager plan work to effectively manage overtime to departmental budget requirements.
  • Responsible for loading and assignment of tasks to employees and contractors within their group.
  • Accountable for the quality, content and on-time delivery of deliverables issued by their group.
  • Participate in recruitment activities and onboarding of new group members.
  • Facilitates daily visual management meetings with their group.
  • Participates in development and implementation of tools, methods and modules ensuring standards maintained.
  • Ensures, checks and approves that all work produced by his/her design team members are acceptable based on the functionality, quality, adherence to standards, accuracy, completeness, and consideration for safety.
  • Approves all material requisitions for projects assigned to his/her team.
  • Maintains labour, material and schedule forecast information and any appropriate improvement plans provided to Program Management for programs assigned to his/her team.
  • Provides primary technical assessments of team members to the department manager for performance evaluations with current and future personnel.
  • Formulate and produce complete electrical design packages, which include detailed schematics, cable routing diagrams, panel layouts, bills of materials and material requisition forms, based on ATS standard specifications and the customers’ requirements.
  • Support Manager in the Selection of Mechanical Designer’s to be an ambassador for ATS
  • Leads and mentors his/her team members.
  • Conduct 1:1 with team members on regular basis to continuously develop & coach them
  • Communicate and be a channel for any constructive or objective ideas that arise; helping to keep the manufacturing standards up-to-date and at the highest level. Use the group as a pool of technical knowledge, solving problems together efficiently and advising on the use of outside sources.
  • Integrate third party equipment and electronic component entry into electrical design package. Examples include serial communications, hardware handshaking, opto-isolation, electrical and ultrasonic welding applications, vision systems, motion control products, transducers and signal conditioners.
  • Verify that electrical design packages are complete, accurate and safe based on sound design practices and accepted standards, and that the I/O lists meet program requirements prior to issue to shop floor.
  • Create a team environment and work with your group to be a positive, motivating force. With the help of Technical Service Manager manage problems (i.e. absenteeism, attitude, workmanship, efficiency, work habits).
  • Step in to fill Service Hardware Engineering duties when required .
  • Understand and ensure that all designs comply with relevant automation design and safety standards, including industry regulations and company-specific guidelines.
  • Qualifications

    Education:

  • A post-secondary diploma, degree or equivalent qualification, specializing in electrical, electronic or controls technology.
  • Experience:

  • 8 years’ experience in electrical control systems design, preferably in the industrial automation field. A working knowledge of AutoCAD/EPlan and the ability to keep abreast of leading-edge technology is essential.
