Job Summary And

Key Responsibilities

The Camberley Planning Team comprises around 14 planners and is the largest of the planning teams within Boyer. It is based at head office, currently in Wokingham, but due to move locally during 2025. The Team operates as a single team; sharing resources and management responsibilities.

The Team provides a comprehensive mix of planning services including site appraisals, planning applications/appeals, site promotion, environmental impact assessment, affordable housing needs assessments, housing land supply assessments.

The Team’s clients include many of the national house builders, some local/regional house builders, land promoters, corporates, local planning authorities, and institutions.

What Are We Looking For

The Head of Boyer South is ultimately responsible for the performance and leadership of the Team, and takes a shared responsibility with other Office Heads and alongside the Managing Director for the overall leadership and management of Boyer.

The suitable candidate will be a member of the RTPI and will have many years’ experience as a Planning Director, ideally in the South East region.

Key competencies for the Head of Boyer South can be summarised as follows:

  • Finance – Being able to set the Budget for the Team and manage the Team’s overall financial performance. Very strong financial disciplines are essential for the role.
  • People Management – Manage the resources of a large Team to ensure everyone has the required amount of billable time, whilst also ensuring people have time for important non‑billable tasks (i.e. business development, training etc). Being a good people person (whilst also being very commercial), and someone who is willing and capable of resolving personal challenges, is essential.
  • Business Management – Being commercially driven and able to prepare the Team’s Business Plan and lead the Team to achieve this.
  • External Profile – Being willing to be an external “face” for Boyer in representing the business at external events and through thought pieces. Someone who is a confident and competent public speaker and has an established/growing and highly regarded client base is important.
  • Time Management – Being able to juggle multiple and often competing priorities (and achieve everything on time) is essential.
  • Corporate – Someone who can introduce new ideas to the business, but is willing and able to work within the existing business corporate structure is important.
  • Personality – Being able to be a strong leader is crucial – i.e. leading by example, taking the strain, taking difficult decisions, and being able to stay calm under pressure.
  • Business Development – someone who has a strong track record as a business winner is essential, and someone who is willing to cross‑sell and work alongside other professional services departments.
  • Planning Director – being a very competent town planner is essential to support the team and to ensure internal and external credibility. It is likely the candidate will have been a planning witness.
  • Confidentiality – someone who can be trusted without question.
