POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Transportation Manager, the Jet Boat Captain is responsible for managing and operating a twin inboard jet boat. The Captain will provide river ferry transit services, ensure passenger safety and well‑being on the vessel, and adhere to all United States Coast Guard regulations and company policies. The Captain is expected to navigate the boat vessel in high and low water in a safe manner and ensure safety rules are followed.
The Captain must have experience operating jet boats to transport passengers, freight, or other cargo along the Klamath River and will manage the daily efficiency of the vessel, along with maintenance and upkeep.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Inspect systems to ensure efficient and safe operation of vessels and equipment and conformance to regulations.
- Maintain records of daily activities and monitor the loading and unloading of cargo and passengers.
- Arrange for and participate in fueling, stocking supplies, and cleaning as needed.
- Ensure safe boat operation and maintain responsibility for passenger and crew safety.
- Read gauges and perform checks to verify sufficient fluid levels prior to operation.
- Communicate with the transit dispatcher to schedule daily routes and provide regular check-ins.
- Operate a two‑way radio to dispatch the transit driver and coordinate ride requests, confirmations, and cancellations.
- Communicate courteously with the public and with colleagues; maintain a professional demeanor.
- Maintain a tactful relationship with supervisor and co‑workers.
- Ensure the maintenance of boats and related equipment (engines, navigational systems, docks, boarding ramps, rescue equipment, fire extinguishers, life preservers).
- Be willing to work five days a week, weekends, split shifts, holidays and in all weather conditions.
- Provide exemplary customer relations and operate the vessel while ferrying passengers.
- Be safety‑minded with strong knowledge of USCG regulations and safety procedures.
- Command the boat in various water conditions; measure and record water depths; provide service on planned river routes.
- Use flashing lights and whistles to signal passing vessels; coordinate with crew for loading/unloading and operation, maintenance, and repair of ship equipment.
- Conduct daily vessel and docking facilities inspections.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- G8:
Bachelor’s degree in related field with one year job‑specified experience. - Employee must be willing to acquire any special certifications or training required for the position.
- Candidates with equivalent combinations of education, training and experience will be considered.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be certified and licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard – Masters License.
- 25 Ton Master or Limited Master License, as authorized by the United States Coast Guard.
- Three years’ experience in driving boats on the Klamath River.
- Knowledge of the Klamath River and river channel.
- Must possess a valid commercial driver’s license Class A or be willing to obtain it within three (3) months of hire; must have a clear driving record and provide a DMV printout.
- Excellent public speaking skills; past tour guide experience preferred but not required.
- First Aid/CPR certification required within 30 days of hire.
- Must obtain Swift Water Rescue training within 90 days of hire.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs the full range of supervisory duties and responsibilities, including planning, evaluating performance, providing guidance, and administering disciplinary actions as needed. Supervises subordinate employees, assigns and reviews work, and ensures accountability. Promotes a team approach to management.
