This grant funded position is funded for one year.
Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties that support Probation Department programs serving juvenile and adult supervised/monitored populations. These duties may include conducting counseling groups, teaching classes, supervising community service, and completing other related duties generally associated with Probation Department programs and services.(The following is used as a partial description and is not restrictive as to duties required.)Leads, teaches and/or facilitates classes and programs for youth and adult supervised/monitored populations; monitors individual’s progress and maintains documentation of program attendance; engages in daily positive interaction with supervised/monitored individuals; assists supervised/monitored individuals in working toward completion of program objectives; provides non-custody transportation of adult and juvenile individuals as needed for programming purposes; installs, monitors and operates electronic monitoring equipment; performs urinalysis collection;
supervises and documents community service work; attends all required trainings and meetings.
Knowledge of:
- Behavior modification principles and techniques in youth and adults;
- Methods and techniques of supervising group activities;
- Electronic monitoring supervision;
- Evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral interventions;
- Mental health and substance abuse counseling;
- Group facilitation techniques with adults and juveniles;
- Motivational interviewing;
- Case management practices and procedures;
- General concepts of community corrections.
Ability to:
- Learn the policies and procedures of the Probation Department;
- Effectively apply behavior modification techniques;
- Deal fairly and effectively with youth and adults under the supervision of the Probation Department;
- Effectively work and communicate with individuals and groups from a variety of social, economic, ethnic and racial backgrounds;
- Comprehend and follow written and oral instructions;
- Effectively communicate both orally and in writing;
- Safely operate a county vehicle;
- Establish and maintain effective working relations with staff, community and social agencies, and the general public;
- Use technology to enter and retrieve information;
- Prepare accurate and complete case records.
Training and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Special Requirements:
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
- Possession of or ability to obtain valid First Aid and CPR certificates.
- Completion of a background investigation.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; sufficient manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; ability to climb, stoop, crouch and kneel; lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance; reach and lift objects above shoulders; physical ability to sustain extra physical effort for a substantial period of time; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment, including computer, telephone, calculator, copiers, and FAX.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Under supervision, individuals in this classification may be assigned to work in various settings both indoors and outdoors. Individuals selected for the position of Program Facilitator I/II must be willing and able to work varied hours. This position, in rare instances, may also be subject to overtime.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees work indoors and outdoors potentially at any hour of the day or night, and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, and hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public or private representatives in interpreting departmental policies and procedures. The duties of this class are performed in an environment with exposure to criminal offenders, mentally ill individuals, and persons potentially infected with communicable diseases.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Program Facilitator I is an entry and trainee level in the Program Facilitator class series. Incumbents work in the Probation Department's Day Reporting Center (DRC) under relatively close supervision. Program Facilitators develop, coordinate, and facilitate programs in the DRC and provide support to probation officers as needed.
The Program Facilitator II is an experienced level in the Program Facilitator class series. Incumbents are expected to perform a wide range of assignments on a work shift with minimal direction and supervision. This class is distinguished from Program Facilitator I by the fact that incumbents are…
