this assignment is for the freshwater crew. They are responsible for inspecting and maintaining the roadways in their area. They are also responsible for roadside maintenance, such as brush cutting and tree trimming, and since they do not use chemicals, pesticides, or herbicides, ditches have to be maintained by hand or machine. They assess, repair or replace drainage systems such as ditches and culverts, as these are an integral component of road maintenance.

- summer hours: m-th, 6:30 am to 5:00 pm, 1/2 hour lunch
- winter hours: m-f, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, 1/2 hour lunch

under general supervision, operates and maintains a variety of complex motorized construction equipment used in the construction, repair and maintenance of roads; may act as crew leader as assigned; performs related work as assigned.
distinguishing characteristicsthis is a skilled-level class in the operation of heavy construction equipment and crusher operations. It is distinguished from senior road maintenance worker which has on-going lead responsibility for a work crew.
- drives construction equipment to and from job sites; loads and unloads equipment from trucks; operates a variety of construction equipment including gradalls, graders, transporters, dozers, rock crushers, front-end loaders, motor rollers, pavers and related equipment.
- sets up, operates, maintains and disassembles crusher equipment; monitors crusher operations; performs specialized crusher repair and maintenance work.
- inspects equipment, performs preventive maintenance and reports needed repairs.
- excavates, backfills, grades and rolls construction and repair sites.
- loads materials and supplies.
- operates equipment used in road maintenance and construction, earth moving and grading; cuts to grade.
- checks job sites for potential hazards; reads blueprints, plans and cut sheets; determines precautions necessary for safe operations.
- performs manual tasks such as constructing fences and guardrails, spreading gravel and sand and/or various other support functions for the road crews; performs manual labor duties in the construction, maintenance and repair of roads and their appurtenances.
- may direct placement of necessary safety and traffic control devices; observes safety precautions related to the work.
- makes operating adjustments and minor repairs to equipment such as changing buckets and teeth and tightening loose bolts and hydraulic couplings.
- secures equipment upon completion of work.
- prepares a variety of basic records and reports.
- operates a variety of hand and power tools related to the work.
- may direct the work of a crew on a relief basis.
- responds to emergency calls in off-hours as required.
