POSITION SUMMARY

Administers, directs and coordinates activities of nursing care within assigned patient care units, and is responsible for the recommendation, development and implementation of policies and procedures in their unit(s) and for keeping the Director of Nursing Care Services informed of both progress and potential problems. Responsible for the direction and evaluation of patient care delivery. Maintain operational aspects of the patient care unit in collaboration with the Director of Nursing Care Services.

QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Graduate from a school of nursing. Current state licensure as professional nurse in this state. Current BLS, ACLS, PALS. Two years of clinical experience, including experience in nursing management preferred. Specialty certification preferred for assigned patient care unit. Demonstrate leadership abilities; able to work under stressful situations. Possess good oral and written communication skills. Demonstrate interpersonal relationships in a manner which enhances communication, promote conflict resolution and facilitate staff development.

Management

of Nursing Personnel
  • Assist with recruitment, interviewing and selection of personnel for the patient care unit in coordination with Director of Nursing Care Services.
  • Provide leadership and direction in accordance with organization and department goals and objectives.
  • Provide for professional growth and development of nursing personnel through identification of needs, sponsoring training programs, encouraging education (formal and continuing) efforts in coordination with Staff Development and evaluation of same.
  • Responsible for completion of regular performance evaluation for each staff member; conduct evaluations for new nursing personnel prior to completion of probationary period.
  • Counsel employees, develop staff and, as appropriate, utilize the disciplinary process.
  • Plan and maintain staffing pattern for the nursing care unit, meeting the patient’s need for continuity of care and level of care.
Management Of The Nursing Care Unit
  • Responsible for safety and comfort of patient and the health and safety of employees assigned to the nursing care unit.
  • Collaborate with ancillary support services to provide a safe, clean and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors.
  • Develop, justify and maintain a fiscal plan (budget) for the nursing care unit. Monitor patient revenues, expenses and operating expenses (salaries and capital expense items) and provide appropriate reports to the Director of Nursing Care Services.
  • Evaluate and set standards for facilities and equipment and monitor utilization of equipment and supplies.
  • Promote open communication within the unit, department, and with other units and departments. Plan and conduct monthly unit staff meetings for each shift.
  • Provide assistance in the orientation to, and practice of, emergency procedures, fire drill, evacuation procedures, and internal, external disaster plans and procedures.
Management Of Nursing Care
  • Provide input and standards in formulating nursing care policy and procedures for the Nursing Care Department and the organization in conjunction with medical staff.
  • Participate in quality assessment and improvement. Review quality assurance reports and integrate appropriate actions into the QA&I system.
  • Supervise all nursing activities and set standard for accurate reporting and recording of patient’s symptoms, reactions, and progress.
  • Supervise, organize and evaluate all nursing care through assessment, planning, intervention, re-evaluation, written documentation, observation and comparison to established standards.
  • Assume the role of patient advocate, respecting guidelines found in the Patient Bill of Rights.
  • Serve as clinical resource person and assist nursing personnel in assessing patient/family status to plan nursing care.
  • Communicate with patient, significant others, and health professionals regarding care to the patients.
  • Provide mechanisms to assure patient and significant others participation in care planning.

Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care and/or services appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned area. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training or experience
