Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental studies, conservation, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Experience in wildlife conservation centers, zoos, or nature-based education programs
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Familiarity with schools, nonprofits, or conservation organizations
  • Experience with reservation or volunteer management systems (e.g., Fare Harbor, Volgistics)
  • Knowledge of native keystone apex species, wolf recovery efforts, and conservation messaging
Working Conditions

Work is performed in office settings, outdoors around animal habitats, and at outreach events. Moderate physical activity required, including standing or walking for extended periods, often on uneven, unpaved ground, and lifting up to 40 pounds. Position includes travel to outreach locations and occasional work at other CWC sites. Weather conditions may include heat, rain, freezing temperatures, wind, and snow due to CWC’s location in Julian, CA.

Classification: Non-Exempt, Hourly

Schedule: Part-time 24 hours/week, approximately 3 days per week, including weekends; flexible based on programming needs;
Some evening hours may be required.

Position Summary

The Education & Outreach Assistant supports the promotion and expansion of California Wolf Center’s (CWC) education and conservation mission through strategic outreach, marketing, and community engagement. This position focuses on social media, public programs, school partnerships, tabling, and relationship-building to increase awareness, participation, and support for CWC education programs.

Working collaboratively with the education team, nature store, animal care, and facilities staff, the Education & Outreach Assistant helps connect diverse audiences to CWC’s ambassador animals, conservation messaging, and educational offerings through both in-person and digital channels.

Essential Functions:

Marketing & Promotion

  • Supports promotion of education programs, tours, and events through social media, digital content, and print materials
  • Assists with creating, scheduling, and monitoring social media posts and event promotions in alignment with CWC branding
  • Helps develop outreach materials, including flyers, newsletters, tabling displays, and digital resources
  • Collaborates with staff to ensure consistent, accurate, and mission-driven messaging across platforms

School & Community Partnerships

  • Develops and maintains relationships with schools, educators, and community organizations
  • Supports scheduling and coordination of school visits, group programs, and outreach opportunities
  • Represents California Wolf Center at public events, fairs, and community outreach activities
  • Tailors messaging and materials for diverse age groups and community audiences
  • Identifies opportunities to expand program reach
  • Responds to phones, email, and correspondence in a timely and courteous manner
  • Supports Visitor Center engagement, including exhibit interpretation, guest interaction, and special weekend programming
  • Ensures safety, inclusivity, and accessibility in all programs

Program Evaluation & Reporting

  • Tracks program attendance, feedback, and outcomes
  • Assists with data collection and reporting to support program improvement and strategic goals
  • Supports budget tracking and expense documentation as directed

Other Duties

  • May be cross-trained to provide occasional support to other departments during special events or due to staffing needs
  • Other duties as assigned
