Job SummaryThe Coatings Engineer leads and supports the coating processes in a defense and aerospace manufacturing environment. This person will handle multiple projects and tasks throughout product development, product launch, and manufacturing. This position also serves as the organization’s Paint/Coating Subject Matter Expert (SME) — supporting, validating, and auditing coating operations (e.g., CARC painting, powder coating) to ensure proper surface preparation, coating application, and compliance with customer specifications.
EssentialFunctions
- Lead and support development of manufacturing processes for coatings.
- Research all applicable coating standards and specifications to ensure compliance
- Work collaboratively with engineers, technicians and painters to improve quality and reduce cost/cycle time for current production coatings
- Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/ or task consistent with engineering policies and procedures
- Work across organizations with design, materials, manufacturing, and quality engineers to develop and execute plans for paint and coatings
- Facilitate third party and customer audits of the paint processes at the manufacturing sites
- Conduct audits of supplier’s paint and coating systems
- Participate in APQP activities for assigned parts/projects, reviewing contracts, drawings, routings, purchase orders, and plans to ensure customer quality requirements are met.
- Review customer contracts for specific quality clauses and compliance requirements.
- Define and maintain coating inspection criteria, such as film thickness, adhesion, cure, gloss, and appearance.
- Investigate coating defects (e.g., runs, fisheyes, pinholes), lead root cause analysis, and implement corrective/preventive actions.
- Review and approve coating-related documentation and provide technical support and training to involved personnel.
- Validate new paint systems, materials, and process changes to ensure coating quality.
- Adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.

Skills and Abilities
- Strong analytical and advanced problem‑solving skills
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints.
- Understanding and application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Proficient with computer applications, including the Microsoft Office suite
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Capable of performing effectively in a fast‑paced, deadline‑oriented environment.
- Associate degree in quality/bachelor’s degree in quality, mechanical or industrial engineering, and five years related experience and/or training; equivalent combination of education and experience.
- National Association of Coating Engineers (NACE) certification is a plus
- At least 5 years’ of coatings and paint related experience in a manufacturing setting.
- Experience with Chemical Agent Resistant Coatings (CARC) is a plus
- Must undergo and meet company standards for background check, employment verification, reference checks and controlled substance testing.
