Company Overview

The Mendocino Companies own nearly 450,000 acres of FSC‑certified timberland and operate a 25‑megawatt biomass power plant and wood pellet plant. They are the largest waterborne wood treater and the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world, with 950 employees.

Responsibilities

The Strip Puller keeps production areas clean, relieves other positions, and assists in other areas of the sawmill when needed in a safe and productive manner.

  • Performs a wide variety of jobs and duties as assigned, with a high level of proficiency and accuracy.
  • Regularly operates a forklift.
  • Keeps equipment and work area clean.
  • Separates waste wood from merchantable lumber in a safe and productive manner.
  • Performs as a relief operator on other jobs as needed.
  • Performs scheduled inspections on equipment and prepares reports as required for management and maintenance personnel.
  • Keeps designated areas, as assigned by supervisor, clean and clear of sawdust, wood chips, bark, strips, and other foreign objects.
  • Operates chain saw to cut up scrap lumber and broken logs.
  • Uses hand tools to move sawdust, chips and bark into conveyors, bins, and scoop on tractor.
  • Operates Bobcat and forklift to transport debris to conveyors or disposal site.
  • May pull strips off transfer chains into conveyors to chippers.
  • May keep lumber straight on transfer chains to trimmer.
  • Empties all garbage cans in and around sawmill.
  • Provides assistance where needed.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • 6 months related experience and/or training preferred, or one‑year equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred forklift license or ability to obtain license.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to apply common‑sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to read and understand instructions and memos and write simple sentences.
Physical Demands
  • Continuously required to stand, walk, climb stairs or ladders, and reach with hands and arms while working on elevated platforms or accessing machinery at height.
  • Must frequently use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate tools, equipment, and controls, and perform repetitive motions such as gripping while separating and pulling lumber.
  • Occasionally required to kneel or crouch when picking up pieces of lumber.
  • Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100 pounds, either independently or with assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally required to detect odors such as smoke, gas, or burning materials indicating safety hazards.
Work Environment
  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration from machinery such as saws, conveyors, and hydraulic systems.
  • Frequently exposed to airborne particles, including sawdust, lubricants, fumes, and welding smoke.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions, as well as high, precarious places including catwalks, scaffolding, and elevated work areas.
  • Exposed to a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow, when working in or around outdoor areas of the facility.
  • Noise level is usually loud, requiring consistent use of hearing protection in designated areas.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as mandated by company policy and OSHA Standards, including safety glasses or face shields, hearing protection, safety gloves, steel‑toe safety footwear, hard hats, and respiratory protection if necessary.
