Come join our team providing Substance Use Counseling for Youth with Substance Use Disorders. Services provided include screenings, assessments, individual & group services and other related duties as assigned.

Substance Use Disorder Counselor Trainee

This is the Trainee level in the series. Under direct supervision, this position is designed for individuals currently enrolled in an accredited program for Substance Use Disorder Counseling and working toward obtaining the necessary certifications or qualifications for full licensure. It provides hands-on training and practical experience while attending school. The individual will receive supervision and support from experienced staff as they develop the skills to become a fully licensed Substance Use Disorder Counselor.

Under general direction and close supervision, this is the entry-level position in the series. Provides substance use education, counseling, crisis intervention and case management services. May assist with planning and implementing SUD prevention activities and programs. Applicants should have knowledge about alcohol/substance abuse and addiction issues, best practices and techniques used to treat individuals with substance use disorders, and ethical and professional standards in the SUD treatment field.

They are expected to gain additional knowledge regarding education, counseling and treatment methodologies as experience increases. Performs related work as assigned.

Substance Use Disorder Counselor II

Under general direction and supervision, this is the journey-level position in the series. Provides Substance Use Disorder education, individual and group counseling, crisis intervention and case management services. May assist with planning and implementing SUD prevention programs. Applicants should possess substantial knowledge of alcohol/substance abuse and addiction issues, treatment methodologies, dual diagnosis concepts, and ethical and professional standards in the SUD field.

Performs related work as assigned.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the duties listed and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties to address business needs.

Responsibilities by level

Substance Use Disorder Counselor Trainee

  • Assist with intake processes, gather background information and assess client needs.
  • Conduct initial screenings and assessments to identify substance use and mental health issues.
  • Participate in treatment planning meetings and collaborate with other service providers as needed.
  • Assist clients in developing treatment plans and recovery goals; monitor and document progress.
  • Document all client interactions, assessments, treatment plans and progress notes in compliance with regulations; adjust treatment plans as necessary.
  • Prepare required reports for supervisor review and case management meetings.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities as directed.
  • Work closely with senior Case Managers and supervisors for guidance and supervision.
  • Attend regularly scheduled supervision sessions to review case progress and ensure adherence to treatment protocols.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive client care.
  • Promote healthy coping strategies and life skills development to support long-term recovery.

Substance Use Disorder Counselor I (In addition to the above)

  • With direction and supervision, conduct client intakes, assessments, treatment plans and recommendations.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Collaborate with public and private agencies including courts and probation.
  • Provide education, counseling, crisis intervention and case management for individuals and their families with substance use disorders.
  • Coordinate referrals with treatment resources including residential facilities or self-help groups as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison with individuals, families and agencies involved in prevention, education and rehabilitation activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Substance Use Disorder Counselor II (In addition to the above)

  • Handle more complex cases with less supervision; participate in treatment planning and monitoring.
  • Engage in community activities related to addiction and behavioral health services.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in utilization management and review.
  • Support medical, clinical, administrative staff, consumer employees and volunteers in achieving agency goals.
  • Maintain accurate documentation meeting reimbursement standards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
All levels

Successful candidates will demonstrate knowledge of the science of addiction, substance use disorders and related problems. Applicants must show a commitment to continuing education and professional development.
