Responsibilities
- Implement standards of nursing practice annually by reviewing and revising as necessary to reflect changes in nursing practice.
- Develop clear, concise, and current written policies and procedures that are available to assist the staff and minimize risk factors.
- Initiates and participates in problem solving, policy forming conferences for patient care services. Maintains close coordination with all departments to ensure continuity and collaboration of services.
- Establishes and directs the nursing model; reviews, evaluates, and modifies administrative and clinical nursing procedures within the hospital; directs and oversees the development and implementation of clinical and operational policies, procedures, and standards for assigned areas.
- Oversees and evaluates patient care documentation.
- Plans and recommendations for the Chief Executive Officer, new facilities or equipment, or modifications thereto, needed to provide patient care.
- Plans and coordinates with the Chief Financial Officer, utilizing the respective department managers/supervisors for the budgeting requirements for personnel, performance of work, supplies, and equipment.
- Responsible for cost controls to ensure maximum effectiveness of funds expended from approved departmental budgets.
- Takes responsible and appropriate action with any unusual occurrences.
- Monitors and evaluates new or revised regulatory agencies and industry laws, regulations, and standards applicable to assigned areas and ensures that assigned activities comply with all requirements.
- Directs the development and implementation of an in-service training program; confers with education and training staff to ensure that the education and training needs for staff in assigned areas are met.
- Addresses and supports cultural practices if such practices do not harm others or interfere with the planned course of medical therapy.
- Serves as a member of professional staff committees in matters pertaining to patient care.
- Intervenes with incidents and/or problems related to patients/residents or families.
- Oversee patient/resident care staffing for appropriateness of hire, ensures termination process is in compliance with established policies and procedures, and ensures annual performance evaluations are completed on a timely basis.
- Implements an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess and improve the quality of nursing care delivered to patients.
- Coordinates and assures each nursing department’s performance improvement program interfaces with and supports the nursing department performance improvement program.
- The results of each assigned department’s performance improvement activities are reported to the respective medical staff committees and to the Board/Medical Quality Committee.
- Assures that nursing leaders review quarterly, the monthly performance improvement compliance with established indicators and sees that corrective actions are taken when negative outcomes are identified.
- Collaborates with hospital leaders in developing, implementing, reviewing, revising, and monitoring hospital-wide performance improvement activities.
- Recommends modifications, additions, or deletions of personnel policies to ensure reasonable hours and acceptable working conditions to provide patient/resident care coverage.
- Performs all aspects of patient/resident care in an environment that optimizes safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors; assured duties are performed in a safety-conscious manner to eliminate or reduce the potential of work-related injury or illness. Maintains awareness of staff compliance with safety procedures.
- Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety, and infection control.
- Participates in the Governing Board, Finance, Policy and Personnel, and Compliance Committee meetings of the Board, and medical staff meetings.
- Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments, and staff.
- Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directive to personnel and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.
