Under direct supervision, the incumbent works in a training capacity, gradually learning to supervise inmates at the Lake County Correctional Facility and maintain facility security. The role involves caring for, securing, and confining inmates, overseeing work details and leisure activities, and performing related duties as assigned.
HIRING INCENTIVEThe Lake County Sheriff's Office is offering a $10,000 hiring incentive to applicants hired as a permanent Deputy Sheriff I/II. The incentive is paid in two $5,000 payments: the first within the next pay period following hire and the second after successful completion of employment probation. Employees must remain employed for two years or repay the incentive.
DEPUTY SHERIFF – CORRECTIONS I Licensing and Certifications- Valid California Driver’s License or acceptance of another state license with acknowledgment of future California license requirement.
- Completion of a Basic Jail Operations Course approved by S.T.C. within six months.
- Completion of P.C. 832 and weapons training within 120 days.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience working in a correctional system or a position with substantial public contact is highly desirable.
- Valid California Driver’s License (or accepted out‑of‑state license).
- Basic Jail Operations Course and P.C. 832/Weapons training required.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of full‑time professional law‑enforcement experience comparable to Deputy Sheriff – Corrections I.
- Supervise inmates and maintain facility security.
- Perform inmate booking, classification, and release procedures.
- Conduct searches for contraband and maintain inmate discipline.
- Open and censor incoming mail.
- Record inmate activities and maintain accurate facility records.
- Escort inmates for appointments, investigations, and court appearances.
- Respond to emergencies and assist in incident investigations.
- Transport inmates to and from facilities as required.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of correctional procedures, inmate control, and state/federal laws.
- Good communication, customer service, and first‑aid skills.
- Proficiency with standard computer applications.
- Physical ability to meet the demands of a correctional environment.
- Background check and drug screening required.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and emergencies.
- Ability to maintain firearm proficiency as required.

Employment ConditionsIncumbents work outside typical office environments, often in extreme temperatures, loud noise, and confined spaces, with exposure to bodily fluids and possible emergencies. The position may require local and statewide travel.
Disaster Service WorkersDeputy Sheriffs may be designated as Disaster Service Workers during emergency conditions and required to perform certain services at the department’s direction.
