Alpine County is recruiting for a DEPUTY SHERIFF I or DEPUTY SHERIFF II in the Alpine County Sheriff’s Department.
ResponsibilitiesUnder general supervision, to patrol an assigned area to effect the prevention of crime and detect situations requiring the attention of a law enforcement officer; to enforce laws in the protection of life and property; to respond to calls for service; to conduct investigations; and to perform related duties as assigned.
Deputy Sheriff I is the entry level classification in this series. Incumbents learn and perform a wide range of law enforcement and crime prevention activities. This class is flexibly staffed with Deputy Sheriff I and incumbents normally advance to the higher level after experience and achieving proficiency which meet the requirements for Level II.
Deputy Sheriff II is the fully qualified, experienced classification in the series. Incumbents competently perform the full range of law enforcement assignments.
RequirementsIncumbent must meet the requirements of California Government Code section 1031.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONSExperience:
- Deputy Sheriff I:
Experience in local law enforcement is desirable although will also consider applicants with CA POST Training Certificate. - Deputy Sheriff II:
One year as a Deputy Sheriff I in Alpine County or two years in other local law enforcement.

Possession of a valid California driver’s license. - Deputy Sheriff I:
Possession of a Basic P.O.S.T. certificate. - Deputy Sheriff I:
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a public safety CPR certificate. - Deputy Sheriff II:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license. - Deputy Sheriff II:
Possession of Basic P.O.S.T. certificate; an Intermediate P.O.S.T. certificate is desirable. - Deputy Sheriff II:
Possession of a public safety CPR certificate.
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens and be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment, pursuant to the requirements established in California Government Code section 1031.
- Incumbent must be of good moral character and able to pass a comprehensive background investigation, including an FBI fingerprint check, pursuant to California Government Code section 1030.
- Incumbent must meet the requirements of California Penal Code section 832 with respect to search, seizure and possession of a firearm.
- Incumbent must have no prior felony convictions or history of criminal behavior, pursuant to Government Code sections 1029 and 1031.
- Incumbent must have no prior history of acts of domestic violence or child abuse.
- Incumbent must have no prior history of hard drug use.
