Responsibilities
  • Selection Process:
    All City applications reviewed for accuracy, completeness and job-related qualifications. A limited number of the most qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an oral interview. Physical agility and written testing may be required. Finalists then must successfully pass a thorough background investigation, medical, polygraph, and psychological examinations. Fingerprints are required. Appointment to the position is contingent upon successfully passing all examinations.

    Applicants who successfully complete the examination process will be placed on an eligibility list.
  • Patrol and Traffic Safety:
    Patrol assigned areas, enforce laws, respond to calls, conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations, and maintain field contacts and reports.
  • Motor Officer duties:
    Patrol on motorcycle or radar-equipped unit; respond to traffic incidents and emergencies; monitor traffic conditions and assist motorists.
  • Investigations:
    Conduct investigations involving juveniles and adults, crimes against persons and property, narcotics, vice and other offenses; interview victims, witnesses and suspects; collect and preserve evidence; prepare reports and file cases with the District Attorney’s Office; provide court testimony.
  • Other Functions:
    Act as training officer, field supervisor, or background investigator as assigned; promote crime prevention and foster community relations; may serve as Canine Officer or School Resources Officer as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education and/or

    Experience:

    Must satisfactorily perform the qualifications of Police Officer I and II. Minimum of seven (7) years of law enforcement experience as a Police Officer with the Lakeport Police Department or equivalent; possession of or eligibility for Intermediate POST Certificate; eligibility for Advanced POST Certificate within two years; satisfactory performance evaluation and letter of recommendation for internal candidates.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Police Officer I/II level knowledge with capability to provide supervisory support when needed.
  • Special Requirements:
    Possession of a Class C California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record; meet requirements of the California Government Code for a Peace Officer; satisfactory results from background, medical, drug, and administrative testing.
Physical Requirements
  • Category IV – Public Safety: meet physical standards for active safety duties; lifting, climbing, reaching, walking, standing, sitting, agility, color vision, and distance vision requirements; work outdoors in various temperatures and environments; operate around moving objects; work on uneven surfaces; work at heights up to 20 feet.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Public Employees Retirement System: 2.7%@57 for new members or 3%@55 for classic;
    City does not participate in Social Security.
  • Holidays:
    Thirteen holidays per pay period when applicable.
  • Vacation: 80–200 hours/year depending on service.
  • Sick Leave: 12 days/year.
  • Medical, Dental, Life Insurance:
    City offers medical, dental and life insurance; employees pay a portion of premiums.
  • Uniform Allowance: $817.50 per year.
  • P.O.S.T Certificate Pay: 2.5% for Intermediate and 2.5% for Advanced (total up to 5%).
  • Pay Day:
    Bi-weekly (every other Friday).
  • Police Vehicle:
    Take-home vehicle within 15 miles of department.
Additional Comments

The Lakeport Police Department welcomes out-of-state lateral candidates. Upon hire, six months are provided to complete California POST certification process; travel and training expenses may be subsidized.
