Basic Function

Kern Community College District accepts applications for part‑time, hourly faculty pools on a continuous basis. Applications are retained for up to two years. This position invites qualified applicants for part‑time, hourly adjunct instructors. The starting salary is $67.00/hour; rate may vary based on type of assignment and Lecture Hour Equivalent (LHE).

Representative Duties

The successful applicant will provide instruction in a full range of Biological Science courses. This includes teaching at other campus sites, day or evening classes, weekend classes, large classes, distance learning, and using multiple teaching methodologies.

Other duties include participation in student recruitment and articulation of transfer programs for the Science department, maintaining subject matter currency, developing and revising curriculum, using computer and multimedia technology, and collegial participation in departmental, college, and discipline‑specific professional activities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s in any biological science.
  • Bachelor’s in any biological science AND Master’s in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science.
  • Possession of a valid credential authorizing full‑time teaching of Biology at the California Community College level.
  • Equivalent qualifications judged as equal by a screening committee. Candidates must submit an APPLICATION FOR EQUIVALENCE form with supporting documents.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Degrees and credits from accredited institutions (Title V Section 53406). Foreign degrees require evaluation by a NACES or ACEI service.
Knowledge & Abilities

The successful applicant will be broadly prepared and have depth of knowledge in the discipline. The applicant will demonstrate the following:

  • Effective collaboration with colleagues in an atmosphere of innovation, teaching, learning, and service to a diverse student population.
  • Ability to work with students having a wide range of skills, motivations, academic, and vocational goals.
  • Design and develop curriculum, including delivery via different modalities.
  • Participation in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges, and universities.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Maintenance of subject matter currency.
  • Assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Proficiency with computers and willingness to explore new technologies.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the California community college mission.
