Summary

Under the supervision of the Language Coordinator, the Language Teacher II plans, delivers, and evaluates Indigenous language and cultural instruction for TANF participants and service area communities. The role supports language revitalization efforts and promotes traditional practices through educational engagement.

Salary

$28.94 to $40.52 per hour

Responsibilities
  • Design and implement culturally relevant curriculum and lesson plans for various age groups
  • Create teaching materials such as illustrations, recordings, dictionaries, and stories
  • Assess and document student progress using appropriate evaluation methods
  • Conduct classes for TANF participants, TANF programs, and community members
  • Organize on-site and virtual activities to reinforce language instruction
  • Participate in Indigenous language training and teaching
  • Collaborate with the Language Coordinator to plan and deliver language and cultural lessons
  • Provide enrichment activities for parents to support language learning at home
  • Record language sessions and submit for archival purposes
  • Lead or support field trips that promote language and cultural engagement
  • Maintain program documentation including attendance and assessments
  • Assist with language projects and resource development
  • Evaluate community needs and help implement responsive instructional plans
  • Stay current in the field through research, workshops, conferences, and networking
  • Study with fluent speakers to improve personal language proficiency
  • Contribute to team efforts and perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1,000 hours of documented instruction by a fluent speaker or equivalent language study history
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate traditional customs into instruction
  • Preferred:
    Teaching experience and cross-cultural education background
  • Valid California Class C drivers license and insurability
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and background check

  • Proficiency in intermediate to advanced language instruction
  • Familiarity with basic, conversational, and immersive teaching techniques
  • Understanding of applicable laws, regulations, and educational standards
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and language education principles
  • Awareness of community history, culture, and linguistic documentation practices
  • Competence in Microsoft Office and related software
  • Ability to lead engaging language and cultural events
  • Strong interpersonal skills across diverse backgrounds
  • Commitment to confidentiality and professionalism
  • Capacity to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Calm and tactful demeanor in challenging situations
  • Sensitivity to the unique needs of Native American participants
  • Creativity in classroom organization and instructional delivery
  • Ability to inspire and motivate learners
Physical Demands
  • Regularly required to stand, sit, use hands, reach, and communicate
  • Frequently walks; occasionally stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls
  • Must be able to lift/move up to 15 pounds
Work Environment
  • Classroom setting with moderate noise
  • May require evening/weekend hours, extended shifts, and travel
