Menlo School seeks a part-time Middle School Mandarin Teacher for the 2026–2027 school year. This is a one-year substitute position to support the Middle School during an employee’s leave of absence. The ideal candidate will have 3 or more years of classroom experience teaching Mandarin at the middle school level, a bachelor’s degree in Chinese, education, or a related field (an advanced degree preferred), and excellent proficiency in Mandarin Chinese (spoken and written).
Familiarity with ACTFL proficiency guidelines and standards-based assessment is strongly preferred.
This is a benefits-eligible position.
The Middle School Mandarin Teacher will teach three sections of Mandarin Chinese in grades 6-8, focusing on communicative proficiency and cultural understanding in an interactive, student-centered classroom. Reporting to the Director of Middle School and serving as a member of the Middle School World Languages Department, the teacher will:
Responsibilities- Design and implement communicative, student-centered lessons that emphasize listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Mandarin Chinese.
- Use a variety of assessments to monitor student progress and provide clear, timely feedback.
- Differentiates instruction for a range of student abilities.
- Plan cultural activities (such as field trips and hands‑on experiences) that deepen students’ understanding of the Chinese‑speaking world.
- Communicate proactively and effectively with parents, students, and colleagues.
- Integrate appropriate technology to support language acquisition and cultural exploration.
- Contribute to the broader life of the Middle School by participating in regular faculty meetings and community events, as appropriate for a part‑time role.
