Overview

The Sherifffs Office is looking for a self-motivated, hardworking Administrative Assistant to join their law enforcement team. Note: This is a temporary position intended to provide administrative support to the Sherifffs Office. The position is expected to last approximately 12 months or through the end of the fiscal year (July 1, 2026), with the possibility of extension based on departmental needs and available funding.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is meticulous, diligent, and proactive, with strong communication and organizational skills. They should be comfortable working in a fast-paced law enforcement environment, handling multiple priorities, and maintaining confidentiality. Experience supporting management-level staff and coordinating complex administrative tasks is strongly preferred.

Examples of Essential Duties
  • Provide general office support.
  • Conduct research and analysis for special projects as assigned.
  • Assists in planning, tracking and organizing budgeting activities.
  • Uses accounting principles and spreadsheets for duties including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and other fiscal tasks.
  • Handle procurement and distribution of office materials and supplies.
  • Captures, maintains, and analyzes various administrative data and prepares reports.
  • Researches and processes various departmental documents, records, and forms requiring contract interpretation and administration.
  • Reviews, researches, and responds to correspondence and inquiries from employees and the public and provides information to resolve complaints.
  • Plans, prioritizes and coordinates Sherifffs Office events.
  • Conduct research and analysis for special projects as assigned.
  • Provides administrative and customer service support.
Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Organizing, prioritizing, coordinating and assigning work activities with minimum direction to meet critical deadlines
  • Basic budgetary principles and practices
  • Functions and organization of municipal government
  • Use and application of computerized data management, word processing, and spreadsheet programs
  • Data collection, analysis and manipulation techniques
  • Performing and detailing research and gathering, tabulating and presenting data
  • Developing systems for improving departmental efficiency and service
  • Accurate English usage, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary
  • Business letter writing and report preparation
  • Operation of common office equipment, including a personal or online computer, facsimile (FAX), photocopiers and printers
Other Requirements

Some positions may require typing at a net rate of 40 wpm. Some positions must submit to and pass a medical examination and a background investigation.

Level I

Equivalent to two years of college level course work from an accredited college or university, with classes in public administration, political science, business administration, economics or a related field and one year of responsible experience in office management, administrative analysis, personnel management, budgetary analysis, or accounting. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

Temporary positions assigned to the Sherifffs Office as special project investigators require equivalent of completion of twelfth grade and a minimum of three years experience within the past five years in law enforcement in either a sworn or non-sworn capacity.

Level II (in addition to the above)

Two years of responsible administrative experience at a level equivalent to Nevada County's classification of Administrative Assistant I.
