Construction Accounting Manager

Reports to: Controller

Salary Range: $95,000 - $105,000 annually (good faith estimate based on experience)

Location: Cameron Park, CA

Are you a detail-oriented construction accounting professional who loves mentoring people and sharpening processes? As our Construction Accounting Manager, you'll drive financial accuracy, operational excellence, and team development. You'll own job costing, WIP reporting, AIA-style progress billings, certified payroll, and compliance documentation--all while elevating our culture with values-first leadership, S.Q.C. (Service, Quality, Character) principles, and A.B.C. (Always Be Communicating) practices to build trust and prevent surprises.

What You’ll Do

Accounting & Financial Management

  • Lead the accounting team to deliver accurate, timely financial and close processes.
  • Maintain and analyze job schedules and job cost reports to monitor project performance.
  • Prepare and review WIP reports for accurate revenue recognition.
  • Manage AIA-style progress billings, retention tracking, and application.
  • Oversee Preliminary Notices and Lien Waivers to meet legal/contractual obligations.
  • Ensure timely, accurate invoicing, including retention and change orders.
  • Utilize construction accounting systems (Sage, Viewpoint, Procore, or similar).
  • Generate insightful financial reports for the Controller and leadership.
  • Support budgeting and financial reporting cadence.
  • Oversee certified payroll and all payroll operations (pay scales, raises, loans, bonuses, reimbursements); provide coverage for payroll and staff accountants as needed.
  • Develop and present monthly accounting KPIs to the Controller.
  • Manage AR/AP to ensure accurate processing and timely collections/payments.
  • Reconcile GL accounts monthly; maintain strong vendor relationships and manage weekly check runs.
  • Strengthen internal controls, compliance, and documentation; take on additional duties as assigned.

People Leadership & Development

  • Lead with S.Q.C. principles--coach, motivate, and develop accounting staff, setting clear expectations and celebrating wins.
  • Onboard and train team members; optimize workflows and cross coverage.
  • Facilitate regular staff meetings, 1:1s, and month-end close procedures.
  • Model values-first conduct, trust building, and relationship building with team members, project managers, customers, and vendors; communicate consistently and clearly using A.B.C. practices.

  • Timeliness of Financial Reporting and Month-End Completion
  • Job Costing Accuracy and WIP Report Accuracy
  • Billing Efficiency (AIA, change orders, retention)
  • Compliance Documentation (Pre Liens, Lien Waivers, Certified Payroll)
  • Internal Controls (Zero instances of non-compliance)
  • Payroll Accuracy (target: 100%)
  • AR Turnaround / AP Turnaround
  • GL Reconciliation accuracy and month-end checklists
  • Proactive staff development and recognition (monthly budget)
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years in construction accounting with deep knowledge of job costing, WIP, AIA billing, and certified payroll.
  • Proficiency with construction accounting software (Sage, Viewpoint, Procore) and Excel.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.; willingness to submit a personal credit report.
  • Strong references: ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
