Description

The Department of Paediatrics in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. The Research Assistant will work with individual Neonatologists and their research teams in the NICUs and other designated neonatology research areas (obstetrics floor and clinic).

Research Assistants provide logistical and research support services to a wide range of projects. These positions monitor trends, compile data, and prepare charts, graphs, summaries, and reports in support of the research activities. Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

Summary of

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with career development and prioritization of tasks
  • Screen for eligible participants and obtain consent from parents for research projects, including documentation of consent conversations in Connect Care
  • Act as the central point of contact for parents, facilitating communication with the broader research team, which includes Principal Investigators (PIs), Research Assistants (RAs), nursing personnel, unit clerks, and administrative management
  • Obtain study samples and process these for storage/analysis
  • Manage and maintain the essential documents for multiple studies, including study protocols, recruitment logs, protocol deviation documentation, records of training for study team members, informed consent forms, questionnaires and patient‑facing documents, REB renewals and modifications, etc.
  • Coordinate REBs, including drafting, submission and amendments for PI review
  • Responsible for the coordination of project activities for multiple studies, including coordinating meetings and trainings for study team members, creating training resources, managing data collection, seeking approval for and maintenance of study‑specific equipment, follow‑ups with study participants, invoicing, and providing feedback on the improvement of recruitment strategies; prepare packages of information to be given to research families as needed
  • Collect data on inpatient study subjects and enter data into a comprehensive database
  • Assist with development of database for studies, monitor and maintain study databases
  • Prepare summaries of the data for presentations and reports, including preparation of reports for multicentre studies
  • Takes minutes of meetings as requested
  • Coordinating with team members for multi‑site Canadian and international trials by attending coordinator meetings, providing recruitments updates, preparing the home site for audits/monitoring/site visits, and troubleshooting study concerns for cross‑site implementation
Qualifications / Requirements
  • Science degree (BSc equivalent or higher preferred)
  • Between 2‑3 years related experience
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Excellent communication and interviewing skills
  • Strong organisational and time‑management skills. Ability to work independently
  • Good scientific procedure skills (careful; precise; pays close attention to details in protocols; good record‑keeping skills)
  • Basic knowledge of research methods, epidemiologic principles and statistics. Knowledge and experience of STATA/SPSS or SAS and REDCap would be an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Demonstrated ability for professional report writing
  • Proficiency in literature search strategies
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programmes including Excel and Power Point
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory procedures (e.g. ELISA, PCR)
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
  • Knowledge of the University of Calgary processes and procedures is desirable
