Civil Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Associate
. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 5 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. The Research Associate will report directly to the Principal Investigator in the Department of Civil Engineering. The role involves contributing to interdisciplinary transportation research focused on topological vulnerability analysis of transportation networks to improve freight and passenger movement. This framework will support evidence-based adaptation and mitigation strategies to enhance infrastructure resilience, reduce inequities in health care access, and lower the economic and environmental costs of freight movement.

The role requires flexibility to meet project deadlines and often demands independent initiative and sound, critical decision‑making.

Summary of

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate the impacts of transportation network disruptions on access to health care services for remote and isolated communities and on regional and provincial commodity flows.
  • Lead and contribute to the preparation and successful submission of grant proposals to federal and provincial funding agencies in support of ongoing and future research initiatives.
  • Prepare technical reports, peer‑reviewed manuscripts, and presentations for dissemination to academic, policy, and industry audiences.
  • Ability to provide research support with minimal supervision to meet project milestones and deadlines, exercising initiative, sound judgment, and critical decision‑making, while providing regular progress updates to the project supervisor.
Qualifications / Requirements
  • A bachelors degree is required, and a graduate degree (minimum MSc) in Transportation Engineering, or a related field, with a strong focus on transportation network analysis, is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in topological vulnerability analysis, infrastructure resilience, or transportation systems modeling.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and modeling tools such as Python, R, and GIS.
  • Proven ability to conduct independent research, publish in peer‑reviewed journals, and contribute to grant writing.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary research teams.
