Veterinary Extern - General Practice
Overview
An externship is an unpaid educational experience. NVA hospitals offer students the opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, we share common goals: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and the provision of exceptional service to animals and the people who love them. Invermere Veterinary Hospital is a general practice located in Invermere, BC.
Externs will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting with or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing clinical skills, externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. Third- and fourth-year veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Details on stipend amounts are available through the stipend program.
