Overview

Your Opportunity:
Make a difference in the lives of Albertans by joining the Department of Cardiac Sciences at South Health Campus, as a Nurse Practitioner (NP). The Women’s Cardiovascular Health clinic offers comprehensive assessment, management, and treatment for women at high risk or with heart disease. The Women’s Cardiovascular Health NP is a self-directed Advanced Practice Nurse who is educated at the graduate level and functions in a collaborative practice model.

Reporting to the Ambulatory Cardiac Sciences Manager, the NP will provide primary and secondary prevention of cardiac disease; diagnosis, management and treatment of conditions that are more prevalent or disproportionately occur in women including non-atherosclerotic coronary disease, i.e., microvascular disease and spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD). The incumbent may be required to support various Calgary sites (satellite women’s cardiovascular health clinic sites such as Foothills Hospital and the Peter Lougheed Center) as demands require.

The NP working within Cardiac Sciences supports diagnosis, management and treatment of conditions that are more prevalent or disproportionately occur in women including non-atherosclerotic coronary disease patients at SHC through outpatient services support. These outpatient clinics provide care to cardiovascular patients through a collaborative team model including admin support, physicians, residents & fellows. The successful candidate will possess effective interpersonal and communication skills to enable working directly with patients and family members and the health care team;

function independently; excel in a dynamic fast-paced environment; demonstrate critical thinking, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills; and maintain flexibility in a dynamic role. Demonstrate ongoing responsibility for maintaining own continuing professional and practice competencies through professional development activities.

Responsibilities
  • Provide a full range of comprehensive health services to individuals across the lifespan as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Integrate clinical skills from nursing and medicine to assess, diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe treatment, and perform procedures to manage health needs.
  • Utilize advanced practice nursing competencies related to Clinical Practice, Leadership and Optimizing Health Systems, Education, and Research to improve care quality, promote appropriate use of health services, and inform healthcare systems.
  • Operate within a collaborative care model and outpatient clinics that serve cardiovascular patients, including support from admin staff, MDs, residents and fellows.
Qualifications
  • Required Qualifications: Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program with a minimum of a Master’s degree. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) on the Nurse Practitioner Registrar, including Provisional Graduate Nurse Practitioner licensure. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

  • Preferred Qualifications: Active practice as an NP in a relevant acute care clinical setting during the past two years. Connect Care (Epic) and MS Office Suite knowledge preferred. Experience in quality improvement and quality improvement certification an asset.
