About the Trauma - Calgary Program

You will be part of a multidisciplinary team that treats trauma symptoms by nurturing connection and safety in the caregiver-child relationship. Children, youth and caregivers are supported through a triphasic trauma treatment model including stabilization, trauma processing and reconnection.

Salary/Wage range: $40.28 - $53.03 per hour

Shift structure:
Monday to Friday, 7.25 hours per day

About the Role

The Mental Health Nurse works collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to provide and coordinate services such as nursing assessment and plan of care, medication administration, teaching, telephone follow up and health promotion. The role may also assist with therapy. The Mental Health Nurse practices according to the code of ethics and practice standards of their specific nursing college.

The Mental Health Nurse will:
  • Complete appropriate nursing assessments (physical and psychosocial) and utilize nursing processes to identify mental health concerns and current risk.
  • Incorporate objective findings such as laboratory, diagnostics, specialist reports and patient history, including:
    • medication reconciliation
    • monitoring of physiological parameters
    • medication side effects
    • suicide risk assessment.
  • Integrate assessment and other data to establish appropriate long and short-term goals, and provide nursing interventions to promote, maintain and restore health.
  • Monitor, evaluate and modify nursing care plans based on effectiveness of interventions and/or changes in condition or environment, in collaboration with the patient and care team.
  • Provide information and instructions to assist in understanding the clinical condition, ongoing care and management.
  • Assist in/co-facilitate individual or group therapy.
  • Accurately document findings in the electronic medical record.
  • Liaise with other professionals to promote continuity of care and assist families with connecting to a primary care physician.
  • Identify service delivery improvements and suggest enhancements with the lens of evidence-informed practice and CASA’s strategic and operational plans.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of child and adolescent development and the impact of trauma and/or mental illness on children’s development, health and well-being.
  • Knowledge and experience in working with caregivers with significant familial intergenerational trauma and/or caregivers with a range of attachment styles.
  • Experience and training in working with blended, adoptive, foster and kinship families an asset.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, problem solving and teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge of family therapy and group therapy would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Health Information and Protection of Privacy Acts in addition to professional organization’s ethics and standards of practice.
  • Respect and understanding of confidentiality/ability to maintain confidentiality regarding personal and sensitive information.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records or similar information systems.
  • Apply theoretical knowledge in a clinical setting.
  • Utilize relevant research findings in daily nursing practice.
  • Ability to identify barriers and facilitate solution development.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to new or unexpected situations and flexibility in approach to interpersonal situations.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing is required.
  • A minimum of three to five years recent pediatric experience in an ambulatory care setting which has included the care and management of children with mental health problems. Acute care…
