The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works as a member of the health care team, collaborating on the delivery of care to meet the needs of patients/clients during the pre- and post-operative journey of surgical patients, as well as medical patients that can be in our care. The LPN is accountable for his/her own practice, according to the standards defined by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta.
The LPN provides care to patients/clients whose health condition and needs are well defined and established, predictable with little fluctuation over time and localized and manageable. The LPN practices to full scope on a busy surgical department. The LPN demonstrates competence in delivering safe, effective and efficient care for patients in the Inpatient Unit in accordance with all elements of the current job description for Licensed Practical Nurses.
Is responsible and accountable for practice, according to the standards defined by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) Standards of Practice and completes care within her/his scope of practice. Direct nursing care includes assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation for assigned patients and works in consultation with RN colleagues and others to meet the needs of more complex patients.
The focus of nursing care is to ensure proper pre-operative assessment and readiness of patients for surgery and to provide thorough care during post-operative recovery. The LPN must also facilitate physical recovery and/or promote health within a very fast paced and dynamic acute care environment.
- As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills.
- You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and AHS policies and procedures.
- You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
- Direct nursing care includes assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation for assigned patients and works in consultation with RN colleagues and others to meet the needs of more complex patients.
- Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program.
- Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA).
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
- Current CLPNA registration.
- 1–2-year recent Acute Surgical Care experience within the last 3 years.
- Physically able to manage extended periods of walking, standing, sitting, lifting, pushing and pulling.
- Demonstrates proficiency in clinical assessment skills within scope of practice.
- Demonstrates strong critical thinking skills.
- Demonstrates effective patient teaching experience (both written and verbal).
- Demonstrates high functioning time management, and organizational skills required to function in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment.
