The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System.

We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market.

We are looking for a talented Legal Counsel to join our Law team. Reporting to the Legal Manager of Tariff and Transmission, this position is key to moving forward the ISO tariff and cost allocation work in 2026 and, more generally, is accountable for working as part of the legal team to deliver timely, strategic, and proactive legal advice to business units across the AESO that is in the best interest of the AESO, industry participants and Albertans.

The Law team plays a key role in the achievement of the AESO’s strategic plan to provide leadership to power Alberta today and into the future. Legal Counsels are knowledge leaders within the AESO and contribute to enabling the transformation of Alberta’s electricity sector while ensuring reliable, affordable power is always available to Albertans. Key qualifications include proven written and oral communication skills, strong critical and strategic thinking skills, and excellent interpersonal and client service skills.

This full-time opportunity offers a competitive salary, and a variable pay program. Accountabilities include but are not limited to:
  • Provide strategic legal advice to AESO business departments, with a primary focus on tariff, transmission, and related regulatory matters.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the AESO’s mandate, business, values, and goals and be able to apply it when providing legal advice.
  • Maintain currency with and provide advice on relevant legislation, government policies and industry issues.
  • Advise and assist in the development of regulatory filings to support the AESO’s tariff and transmission-related accountabilities, including need identification documents.
  • Develop knowledge of AUC submission and proceeding processes and assist with the AESO’s participation in AUC proceedings.
  • Provide input regarding the AESO’s regulatory processes and seek continuous improvement of those processes.
  • Develop an understanding of key AESO stakeholders and be able to understand and integrate stakeholder feedback in the provision of legal services.
  • Participate and, where appropriate, lead strategic business initiatives.
  • Work with and manage external counsel.
