ACA is the oversight agency for acute care providers in Alberta, including provincial health corporations and chartered surgical facilities. The scope of work within the oversight governance and commercial relationships will be extensive and engaging.
Reporting to the General Counsel, the Commercial Lawyer provides strategic legal guidance on complex corporate and commercial matters, including procurement, contracting, finance, policy, and intellectual property. This role requires a highly adaptable legal professional capable of delivering timely, high-quality advice in a fast-paced environment.
The successful candidate will focus on commercial and contract law, including negotiation, drafting, and advising on public sector procurement. You will independently manage legal files, assess client needs, and develop practical solutions to both routine and urgent challenges.
A key aspect of this role is balancing business requirements with legal risks while identifying operational impacts. You will engage with internal and external stakeholders, contribute to policy and template development, and represent ACA in negotiations and legal discussions.
The role demands strong legal, analytical, and communication skills, along with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple assignments under tight deadlines. Occasional travel within Alberta may be required, likely on an infrequent basis and matter specific.
Description
The incumbent identifies service delivery, business, operational, and sensitive legal issues and raises them with the General Counsel and senior leadership. Coordinates and administers standardized work methods, protocols, policies, and procedures related to commercial law within Acute Care Alberta. Conducts legal research and potentially prepares memos and legal opinions on a wide range of commercial matters. Works independently on assigned files to provide timely and effective legal support aligned with ACA’s priorities.
Provides accurate and concise legal advice tailored to specific facts and legal issues, including those related to procurement and contracting. Drafts contracts and revises legal templates to meet ACA’s needs. Fosters and maintains positive and effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Represents ACA in negotiations and legal dealings with third parties.

Required Qualifications
Qualified to practice law in Alberta and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta. Minimum 7 years relevant experience (excluding articling year).
