Job Details

The Manager, Payroll & HRIS Transition is a critical 1 year temporary leadership role responsible for ensuring payroll continuity while supporting the organization’s transition to a new HRIS platform. This role combines operational payroll leadership with project-driven transformation responsibilities, acting as a leadership support between Payroll, HRIS and the implementation teams.

The successful candidate will initially focus on stabilizing payroll operations, supporting process improvement, and then move to leading payroll readiness activities related to HRIS implementation, ensuring accurate and compliant pay outcomes throughout the transition period.

This role reports to the Sr. Director, People Operations & Systems and interacts with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and operational oversight of payroll processing across multiple employee groups.
  • Support payroll team capacity, workload balancing, and issue resolution during high-volume and transition periods.
  • Ensure payroll accuracy, compliance, and adherence to legislative requirements (federal/provincial).
  • Partner with Sr. Manager, Payroll to resolve complex payroll matters.
  • Review and strengthen payroll controls, documentation, and audit readiness.
  • Act as payroll lead and subject matter expert for HRIS implementation activities.
  • Support current-state process mapping and future-state payroll design.
  • Partner with HRIS vendors and internal project teams to define payroll requirements.
  • Participate in data validation, payroll configuration testing, and parallel payroll runs.
  • Identify risks related to payroll transition and proactively develop mitigation plans.
  • Support change management and adoption activities related to payroll processes.
  • Identify process inefficiencies and recommend practical improvements.
  • Improve documentation, SOPs, and knowledge transfer within payroll.
  • Support data quality initiatives and payroll governance standards.
  • Help establish sustainable practices that remain in place after the transition.
  • Serve as a key liaison between Payroll, HR Operations, IT, Finance, and implementation partners.
  • Translate operational payroll needs into technical requirements.
  • Provide clear communication and status updates to leadership.
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education with PCP / CPM designation
  • Significant experience in Canadian and US payroll practices and related legislation
  • Demonstrated experience in payroll process improvement and business efficiencies
  • Requires a minimum of five (5) years of management, and preferably, payroll experience.
  • Strong leader – collaborative, understands their impact on people, acts with integrity, respectfully holds people accountable, focused on continuous improvement
  • Good judgement - a decisive individual who possesses a  big picture  perspective, exhibits sound and accurate judgment, and makes timely decisions
  • Problem solver - identifies and resolves problems proactively and in a timely manner
  • Sound knowledge of Payroll legislation
