About the RoleReporting to the Director, HR, Employee and Labour Relations, the HR Advisor provides consistent support to the HR Business Partners on a wide range of HR functions, including Employee and Labour Relations, Talent Management, Talent Development, Compensation and Benefits. They will also support the Senior Consultant, Employee and Labour Relations as needed.
The HR Advisor will provide direct front-facing client support as well as advising and administering operational processes behind the scenes, and ensuring these processes are effectively planned, coordinated and communicated. They will provide recommendations in line with all applicable collective agreements, terms and conditions of employment, policies, procedures, labour laws and HR best practices. They will also advise on the development of policies, processes and systems to assist in realizing efficiencies and increasing the support HR is able to provide.
The HR Advisor must thrive with high-volume work driven by internally and externally imposed deadlines and requirements, with regular interruptions and competing interests.
ResponsibilitiesEmployee and Labour Relations Support
- Provide consistent employee and labour relations support within the guidelines of the university, collective agreements, terms and conditions of employment, policies, procedures, human rights and labour laws, and any other applicable legislation
- Interpret and apply collective agreements and relevant legislation and communicate pertinent information
- Assist with preparation and support, research and planning for complex files, grievance hearings, workplace investigations, disciplinary meetings and termination meetings
- Act as the note taker and/or co-lead in workplace investigations
- Provide research, analysis and coordination support
- Supports Collective Agreement implementation
Talent Management and Development
- Support the HR Business Partner and/or clients with the recruitment and selection process for senior-level, challenging, and/or difficult-to-fill positions
- Ensure recommended practices and processes are followed to effectively facilitate all recruitment and onboarding activities
- Evaluate and verify that salary recommendations are appropriate, equitable and in compliance with relevant policies or collective agreements
- Provide leadership development training and other identified training needs
Compensation and Benefits
- Support the HR Business Partners with compensation processes and practices within the university
- Support the classification (job evaluation) process to ensure consistency
- Assist clients with the creation of job descriptions which accurately capture requirements and accountabilities
Reporting and Project Work
- Identify opportunities for process or program improvements, and support large-scale projects within the HRBP team
- Pulls and tracks reporting, and provide data interpretation for the HRBP team
- Support the HR Business Partners in collecting and compiling pertinent data
Other Duties
- Communicate proactively to ensure the department is informed of any key or emerging issues.
- Support HR Business Partners with change management initiatives
- Provide support for the operational and administrative aspects of HR processes
- Support the Director in keeping minutes for team meetings.
- Provide guidance regarding the performance management process for all employee groups, potentially including overseeing compliance, and reporting concerns or trends
- A university degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Business or a related field is required
- 3 – 6 years of related experience, with a minimum 1 – 3 years of experience in a generalist HR role (preferably in a unionized environment)
- A CPHR designation would be considered an asset
- Strong attention to details
- Strong Communication skills both verbal and written
Salary: $76,361.00 - $86,462.00 per annum
