Job Summary:

The payroll administrator will effectively manage the full cycle for payroll and benefits, deductions processing and related payroll administration activities for employees of the Company. Provide effective payroll-related communications and solutions to all stakeholders in operations. Promote and lead continuous improvement initiatives in payroll processing by researching and implementing best practices which are viable and cost effective.

This position is fully remote; however, preference will be given to candidates located in Calgary, as occasional on-site visits are required.

What You Will Do
  • Manage the preparation, calculation and disbursement of wages and salaries for company employees and ensure the integrity of payroll related information on all systems as it relates to payroll processing.
  • Establish policies and procedures to ensure that payroll is properly prepared and distributed and that all accounting procedures (journal entries and payroll account reconciliation’s) are accurate and meet internal and external audit requirements.
  • Ensure accurate and complete personnel and payroll files are maintained for all employees and respond to employee queries concerning payroll and benefits deductions matters and benefits expense queries in a professional and discrete manner.
  • Implement and administer the company’s employee benefits programs including, but not limited to, group life insurance, medical, dental, disability, pension, profit sharing, group RRSP’s, WCB, and union dues as they pertain to payroll.
  • Ensure related materials and documentation with respect to payroll and with holdings/deductions are effectively communicated to employees when changes occur.
  • Collaborate with human resources staff on issues impacting payroll processing or related payroll information requirements.
  • Identify opportunities for procedural improvements and implement approved changes.
  • Perform due diligence on employee terminations as they pertain to payroll processing ensuring full compliance with all payroll taxation regulations.
  • Coach and mentor a staff member to be a competent back-up to the Payroll Administrator for ensure continuity during periods of absence.
  • Complete year-end reporting requirements in a timely manner.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Manager, Human Resources, or his/her designate.
Qualifications/ Skills/ Knowledge
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in accounting, payroll and benefits administration.
  • Canadian Payroll Association Accreditation.
  • 6 or more years payroll experience managing a diverse payroll of 300 employees or more, in Canada (across all provinces).
  • Experience with Quebec payroll practices considered an asset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to deal effectively with employees at all levels within the organisation.
  • A comprehensive understanding of federal and provincial employment legislation and CRA rules and regulations as they pertain to payroll.
  • Proficiency in ADP Workforce Now and accompanying reports.
  • Well-developed skills in organization, problem solving, attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to convey payroll-related information to branch personnel.
  • A working knowledge of how HRIS interfaces with payroll processing is desirable.
  • Intermediate level Windows, Word and Excel, e-mail and PowerPoint.
