The Employee Wellness team at Mount Royal University supports the holistic well-being, safety, and inclusion of all employees. Through programs focused on accommodation, ability management, psychological health, and workplace wellness, the department fosters a culture where employees are supported to perform their best work while maintaining balance and safety.
Employee Wellness collaborates with Human Resources, Environmental Health & Safety, associations, leaders, and employees to ensure a compassionate, consistent, and legally compliant approach to medical leaves, return to work planning, and workplace accommodations. The team also provides guidance and education to promote a healthy, respectful, and inclusive work environment.
About the RoleReporting to the Manager of Employee Wellness, the Accommodations and Ability Management Specialist plays a key role in fostering a supportive, safe and inclusive workplace by ensuring compliance with human rights, employment, and occupational health and safety legislation.
This position provides expert guidance on complex accommodation and ability management matters and is responsible for developing education and awareness programs for leaders across the University.
Through sound judgment, empathy, and collaboration, the Accommodations and Ability Management Specialist helps ensure employees are supported in performing their duties safely and effectively, while balancing operational needs and legal obligations.
This position is a full-time role working 35 hours per week.
ResponsibilitiesAccommodation Management
- Manage complex accommodation requests (medical, family status, religious, and other protected grounds) across the University.
- Interpret medical documentation to assess restrictions/limitations and inform accommodation planning.
- Provide expert level advice and guidance to leaders across the University regarding the duty to accommodate and the duty to inquire.
- Provide assistance to leaders in the assessment of appropriate accommodation measures while taking into consideration any operational and bona fide occupational requirements.
- Lead accommodation meetings with leaders, employees and when applicable, associations and Human Resources.
- Document accommodation efforts and write accommodation plans.
- Maintain an intricate knowledge and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and related requirements (e.g. Human Rights, Privacy, OH&S, collective agreements, etc.).
Ability Management
- Manage complex short term and long term disability claims.
- Correspond with physicians to ensure sufficient information is provided in relation to leave requirements and to assist with return to work planning.
- Identify when further assessments are necessary including but not limited to Independent Medical Evaluations, vocational assessments and functional capacity evaluations.
- Make any necessary referrals and ensure proper consent is in place to release sensitive and confidential information.
- Ensure confidentiality and privacy is maintained in all matters that involve sensitive information.
- Continuously improve internal processes by integrating industry best practices.
Education and Program Development
- Design and deliver training for leaders on accommodation and ability management and related human rights obligations.
- Support the development of an absentee management program to ensure consistency, accountability and fairness in attendance practices.
- Create tools, resources, and communications to enhance understanding of accommodation and ability management processes.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field.
- Professional designations such as Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) or Certified Return to Work Coordinator (CRTWC) are considered assets.
- Certificates or diplomas in Disability Management, Labour Relations and Employment Law, or Human Rights are considered assets.
- Minimum of 5–7 years of related experience, ideally in a unionized or public sector environment.
- Proven expertise in managing complex accommodation and disability cases.
- Deep understanding of human rights, duty to accommodate, case law, and employment standards.
- Ability to interpret medical information and obtain the appropriate medical information needed to assess accommodation measures.
- Ability to exercise discretion in managing sensitive employee issues while balancing legal and operational priorities.
- Demonstrated skill in building trust and collaborating effectively with employees, leaders, HR, associations and healthcare providers.
Salary: $76,361 - $96,565 per annum
