The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is seeking a permanent full-time Coordinator, Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) who will provide administrative and operational support to ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations. This role assists in the implementation of EHS programs, maintains accurate documentation, and helps foster a strong safety culture across the organization.

What you will do- Supports the maintenance of our Certification of Recognition (COR)
- Supports the implementation of EHS initiatives and sustainability programs
- Coordinates and tracks revisions to safe work procedures, policies, and guidelines
- Conducts, coordinates and facilitates workplace inspections and compliance audits
- Conducts a multitude of EHS risk and hazard assessments to ensure safety and environmental compliance as it relates to the public, zoo staff, volunteers, contractors, zoo animals and infrastructure
- Maintains accurate EHS documentation and compliance records
- Supports incident reporting and investigation processes including the effectiveness of corrective actions
- Monitors and responds to safety concerns and reported incidents and near miss
- Identifies trends in incident and near miss data and recommends proactive strategies to prevent recurrence and support organizational learning
- Participates on the Health & Safety Committee (HSC)
- Coordinates emergency response drills, including scheduling, organizing and communicating in conjunction with relevant departments
- Assists in the development, coordination and maintenance of emergency preparedness plans
- Arranges, schedules and tracks safety and compliance training for staff
- Maintains the WHMIS Program, including the SDS system
- Promotes a culture of safety and conservation through clear communication
- Monitors and advises on changes relating to health and safety legislation
- Other duties as assigned.
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, occupational hygiene or related field or an equivalent combination of education and related experience
- Progressing towards a certification as a Certified Safety Professional, Canadian Registered Safety Professional or Canadian Registered Safety Technician is preferred
- 3-5 years of experience in EHS or administrative support (internship experience welcome) in the construction, manufacturing or public safety industries
- Experience with and practical knowledge of workplace hazards, risk assessments and Job Safety Analysis
- Experience in implementing field safety programs, including the ability to communicate requirements to a range of audiences including workers, volunteers, managers and senior leaders
- Experience as COR auditor an asset
- A valid Standard First Aid is required
- A driver’s license is required
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with EHS software is an asset
- Familiarity with the principles of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
- Strong understanding of Alberta OHS legislation, regulation, and policies related to workplace safety and hygiene
- Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to influence without authority and foster inclusive dialogue
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations
- Flexible and adaptable with changing demands and priorities
- Prolonged periods of exposure to the elements
- Extended periods of walking
- Extended periods sitting completing data entry
