The Ministry of Jobs Economy, Trade and Immigration is looking for two (2) Lead Investigators within the OHS Program Delivery Branch.

As a member of a multidisciplinary Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) team, the incumbent leads investigations into fatal and serious workplace incidents. This role is responsible for all aspects of an investigation from initial assignment and incident response to interviewing injured workers, families, or next of kin. Fatality and serious incident investigations are complex and require a forensic level of detail and analysis.

Lead Investigators have broad legislative authorities to engage with employers from various industries, to reduce risk and keep workplaces healthy and safe through enforcement and education. OHS Officers are required to become Alberta Peace Officers
- Level 2 (link). As a Lead Investigator appointed on behalf of the Government of Alberta you will continue to make a positive, tangible difference by:

  • Leading comprehensive and unbiased investigations into reportable incidents, ensuring a safe work environment is being maintained and potential work site hazards, risks, and /or controls are identified.
  • Ensuring all workplaces understand their responsibilities under the OHS Act, regulation and Code.
  • Issuing tickets, orders, and administrative penalties to ensure compliance with the OHS Act, regulation and Code.
  • Promoting and supporting initiatives that foster safer workplaces.
  • Modeling the values of respect, integrity, accountability, and excellence in all interactions.
  • Prepare cases for prosecution and provide evidence in court, as required.
  • Take immediate action to control imminent danger situations at worksites.
  • Perform unscheduled after‑hours work, when required.
  • Perform scheduled on‑call shifts (Friday-Friday) requiring scene attendance outside of standard work hours.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

As a Lead Investigator you must have the ability to work effectively in both a team setting and independently in the field conducting serious incident investigations, providing presentations and participating in various safety and health related projects. This includes liaising with internal and external stakeholders such as staff, OHS Compliance, third‑party subject matter experts, and Specialized Prosecutions Services within the Ministry of Justice, particularly in cases where charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act are pursued.

There will be occasional exposure to emotionally stressful or traumatic situations, frequent travel while working alone in the field, and extended work hours.
