The Role
Sr. Policy Advisor, based in Calgary, AB. Reporting to the General Manager, External Affairs, this role will be responsible for understanding and providing analysis and feedback on government and regulatory policy, with input to the advocacy framework to support our strategic direction. You will support Senior Management and various business units in developing and activating policy strategies. This role will require the establishment of key relationships with external parties involved in influencing or setting policy such as regulatory bodies, industry groups, trade organizations and government representatives when and as required.
This is a 14-month temporary contract position.
How You Will Contribute- Understand key business and operational requirements that may be affected by government or regulatory policy, e.g. electricity, climate, environment
- Identify emerging and ongoing issues in the external landscape, and develop integrated policy strategies and solutions to support the organization
- Keep the External Affairs team and senior leadership apprised of critical regulatory and political issues through the development of regular reporting tools and positions papers
- Coordinate representation on external working committees to ensure alignment on key initiatives, and provide strategic direction to PETRONAS Canada representatives
- Participate and advise in strategies that enhance PETRONAS Canada’s reputation with key stakeholders
- Lead and facilitate internal department collaboration on the alignment of policy and advocacy initiatives with our corporate activities and strategy
- Participate in the execution of the External Affairs Strategy and plans to manage the company’s risk, build its profile, and develop its reputation as a strategic policy contributor with industry, regulators and governments
- University degree from a related program required
- 10 - 15 years progressive experience in government and/or policy engagement roles
- Strong understanding of the external, political and policy landscapes in British Columbia, Alberta and the Federal government, including lobbying requirements and compliance processes
- Strong written communication skills including building PowerPoint presentations for internal and external audiences and internal briefing notes
- Strong project-management skills, with an ability to multi-task and remain flexible when priorities change
- Demonstrated experience working with external stakeholders with a reputation for fostering and maintaining positive external relationships
- Highly effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills
