Overview
We are seeking a senior finance leader to join a not-for-profit organization in the role of Director of Finance. This position offers the opportunity to provide strategic financial leadership within a mission-driven environment while overseeing a sophisticated and multi-faceted finance function.
Reporting to the CFO, the Director of Finance will be responsible for financial stewardship, operational oversight, and strengthening financial insight across the organization. This role is well-suited to a collaborative, values-oriented finance professional who brings both strong technical expertise and a practical, business-minded approach.
What You’ll Be Responsible ForStrategic & Organizational Finance
- Act as a strategic partner to executive leadership, supporting decision-making through clear financial analysis and advice
- Contribute to long-range planning, financial sustainability, and risk management initiatives
- Support leaders across the organization in understanding financial impacts and trade-offs
Financial Operations & Reporting
- Oversee all core accounting activities, including general ledger, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with applicable standards
- Manage external audit processes and relationships
Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis
- Lead organization-wide budgeting and forecasting processes
- Monitor financial performance, analyze variances, and provide actionable insights
- Support cash flow management and forward-looking financial analysis
Systems, Controls & Governance
- Strengthen financial controls, policies, and documentation
- Improve finance systems, reporting tools, and workflows to enhance efficiency and transparency
- Ensure compliance with regulatory, funding, and reporting requirements relevant to the not-for-profit sector
- Lead, coach, and develop a multi-level finance team
- Set clear performance expectations and support professional growth
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
Stakeholder & Board Support
- Prepare financial materials for executive leadership and governance committees
- Attend meetings as required and present financial information in a clear and accessible manner
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Business, Economics, or a related field
- 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting and financial management
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing and developing teams
- Experience in not-for-profit accounting and financial reporting (strongly preferred)
- Solid understanding of budgeting, forecasting, audit management, and internal controls
- Ability to translate complex financial concepts for non-finance stakeholders
- Strong judgment, professionalism, and attention to detail
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
