The Principal Mechanical Engineer provides senior-level technical leadership across mechanical engineering activities, ensuring high-quality design, analysis, and execution of complex projects. This role acts as a subject matter expert, mentors engineering teams, and collaborates with multidisciplinary stakeholders to deliver safe, reliable, and cost‑effective technical solutions.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the development, review, and optimization of mechanical engineering designs, specifications, and deliverables across all project phases (concept, FEED, detailed design, execution).
- Provide expert technical guidance on rotating equipment, static equipment, piping systems, HVAC, and mechanical packages—ensuring compliance with codes, standards, and best practices.
- Perform advanced engineering calculations, simulations, root‑cause analysis, and design assessments.
- Oversee equipment selection, sizing, design strategy, material selection, and vendor/subcontractor technical evaluations.
- Conduct design reviews, HAZOPs, and technical risk assessments; drive solutions to mitigate operational and safety risks.
- Support project managers by defining scope, estimating engineering effort, and ensuring alignment with project goals, schedules, and budgets.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (Process, Electrical, Civil/Structural, Project Controls, Procurement, Construction).
- Lead development and continuous improvement of engineering standards, workflows, and technical guidelines.
- Mentor junior and intermediate engineers, providing coaching, technical direction, and quality oversight.
- Act as the primary point of contact for clients on mechanical technical matters, presenting design approaches, responding to queries, and supporting project decision‑making.
- Support construction, commissioning, and field troubleshooting as required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master’s degree an asset).
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng, CEng, or equivalent) or eligibility for registration.
- 10–15+ years of experience in mechanical engineering within industrial sectors (oil & gas, energy, petrochemical, mining, manufacturing, utilities, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of applicable engineering codes and standards (ASME, API, ISO, NFPA).
- Proven ability in leading technical teams and managing engineering deliverables.
- Experience with mechanical design software, modeling tools, and calculation packages.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to influence, present, and collaborate effectively.
- Demonstrated problem‑solving, decision‑making, and analytical skills.
- Experience with FEED and detailed engineering for large capital projects.
- Background in rotating equipment, static equipment, or piping engineering specialties.
- Experience supporting construction, commissioning, and maintenance activities.
- Familiarity with reliability engineering and lifecycle asset management principles.
- Exposure to EPC or EPCM project environments.
