Assistant Professor (Teaching) or Associate Professor (Teaching), Small Animal Surgery and Surgical Skills
The University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) invites applications for a full-time academic position in Small Animal Surgery and Surgical Skills. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (Teaching) (with tenure), based on qualifications and career expectations. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2025.
This role involves teaching undergraduate students, focusing on basic and general surgical skills, especially small animal surgery. Responsibilities include didactic lectures, clinical and professional skills laboratories, 4th-year rotations, and clinical duties in our distributed veterinary teaching hospital and partner practices. Service duties will constitute 10-20% of the role, depending on rank.
Position Requirements
- A DVM (or equivalent) and advanced clinical training in surgery (e.g., internship, residency, or extensive continuing education).
- Board certification (ACVS or ECVS) is preferred but not required.
- A graduate degree in clinical or educational research is an asset.
- Eligibility for licensure in Alberta as a general practice veterinarian.
Qualifications for Assistant Professor (Teaching): Evidence or promise of teaching effectiveness, scholarly approach to teaching, participation in reflective practice, and professional development in pedagogy.
Qualifications for Associate Professor (Teaching): All of the above, plus demonstrated ability to design learning experiences, engage students, and participate in scholarly activities related to teaching and curriculum development.
