What qualifications are we looking for?

At YMCA Calgary we strive to ensure our employees are a fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals. The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Experience working with children to facilitate belonging within outdoors-based programs
  • Horse and riding experience (any discipline)
  • Previous coaching and/or guiding experience is an asset
  • Previous supervisory experience is an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good emotional fitness (zero tolerance for directing negative feelings at participants, staff, animals, or equipment)
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C certificated within the last 12 months from an approved AB OHS provider. Asset if certification is issued by one of the following five Canadian organizations:
    Canadian Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lifesaving Society, St John’s Ambulance and/or Canadian Ski Patrol.
  • Wilderness First Aid is an asset
  • Evidence of a clear Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Three professional references
What does this role look like at YMCA Calgary?

Duties and

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead YMCA horse programming, including horsemanship classes, horseback riding lessons, arena rides and guided trail rides for participants with varied and often limited experience and skill
  • Contribute to barn operations and herd maintenance including catching, grooming, and saddling horses, identifying horse health concerns, behaviour management and guidance, basic veterinary care, cleaning, and barn chores
  • Work as part of a collaborative team to support all campers, participants, and fellow staff
  • Support the Ranch and all program areas at CCH
  • Be responsible for the risk management and comfort of participants
  • Support the Ranch and program operation’s Health and Safety obligations as defined by law and YMCA policies
  • Support group development and create a positive learning environment for all participants and staff
  • Support the planning and facilitation of intentional, developmentally appropriate play‑based learning activities – this focuses on engagement in active play outside, both scheduled and creative activities
  • Contribute to YMCA outdoors programming and facilitate horse programs that support camp experience impact goals
  • Support the development of a team through training, supervising, and providing feedback, both positive and constructive to each staff member
