Your roleCBC Indigenous is a dynamic and creative team with a goal to engage with and reflect the diverse Indigenous audiences across the country and deepen understanding and conversation for all Canadians. We share, elevate and celebrate Indigenous stories on social media and across all CBC platforms.
We are looking for a senior reporter based in Calgary, Alberta to cover Indigenous communities and issues in southern Alberta and across the Prairie region. As part of CBC’s expanded coverage of underserved communities, this position will help build new relationships and enhance our current ties to First Nations and Métis communities. The successful candidate will be an exceptional journalist with a broad range of video, audio and text storytelling skills and a strong connection to Indigenous communities.
As a senior reporter, you are a creative, strong critical thinker who has in‑depth knowledge of Indigenous stories and issues. You will be expected to produce original journalism, write stories for online platforms and deliver content to various video platforms and radio broadcasts. You demonstrate editorial leadership and strong writing and analytical skills. Excellent presentation skills are a must, as you will be researching, writing and packaging on‑demand content for national digital, social, radio and television programs and platforms.
You have the ability to go live when needed – on streaming, television, radio and on digital live pages.
In this role, you will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve.
This is a full‑time permanent role that will be based in Calgary.
This job could include weekend work – Saturdays and Sundays, and will involve some travel.
Key tasks- Generate and execute journalism that elevates a range of voices and perspectives within the Indigenous community;
- Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, creative and original story ideas.
- Strong knowledge and/or connection to Indigenous communities in Alberta and the Prairie region.
- Creative video presentation skills, especially for digital video and social media platforms.
- Go live when the story demands it – on video, audio and through text.
- Produce original content and be responsive to stories that are emerging, ongoing and breaking news events.
- Strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
- Write scripts and file stories ranging from daily news to longer‑form pieces and features as required for both digital and broadcast platforms.
- Pitch and cover news of relevance to our Indigenous and non‑Indigenous audiences. Research and gather information. Analyze complex issues from specialized sources to enhance the understanding of CBC audiences.
- Work collaboratively with local and network newsrooms.
- Develop and maintain contacts with a variety of sources.
- Proven ability in the field and knowledge of the news media industry;
- Demonstrated deep knowledge and understanding of Indigenous issues and communities;
- Strong presentation skills for broadcast platforms with particular focus on digital video and social media platforms. Comfortable reporting live;
- 7 years of comparable and relevant experience preferred;
