Who We Are Looking For
Business Link Alberta is seeking four (4) experienced and passionate individuals to join our Board of Directors. As a Board Member, you will play a vital role in providing oversight, governance, and strategic direction to help us fulfill our mission: helping Alberta small businesses start and succeed.
Business Link Alberta welcomes candidates who may be new to board service and is committed to providing mentorship and ongoing governance training to support the development of effective and confident board members.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Governance & Strategy:
Provide oversight and strategic guidance to ensure organizational alignment with Business Link Alberta’s mission and long-term priorities.
Financial & Risk Oversight:
Safeguard the organization’s financial health, ensure compliance with funding agreements, and oversee risk management.
Stakeholder Engagement & Advocacy:
Support fundraising, partnerships, and act as an ambassador for Alberta’s small business community.
Board Participation:
Actively contribute at board and committee meetings, including participation in the Executive Director’s performance review.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
We are seeking individuals with expertise in one of the following areas of strategic priority:
Fund Development & Strategic Partnerships:
Experience in nonprofit fundraising, corporate sponsorship, foundation relationships, or revenue diversification.
Indigenous Entrepreneurship & Economic Development:
Strong relationships and leadership experience supporting Indigenous business development, community economic growth, or Indigenous-led entrepreneurship initiatives.
Immigrant Entrepreneurship & Settlement Ecosystems:
Expertise in newcomer-serving organizations, immigrant business networks, or settlement and integration supports.
People & Workforce Governance (HR Leadership):
Background in talent strategy, organizational development, executive leadership, or human resource governance.
Ideal candidates will also bring:
Strategic thinking and sound decision-making.
Financial acumen and familiarity with risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
Understanding of government-funded nonprofit environments.
Strong communication skills and commitment to diversity and inclusion.

COMMITMENT
Business Link Alberta Board Members are subject to annual re-appointment and are eligible to serve a maximum of eight (8) terms (consecutive or otherwise).
Time Commitment:
Quarterly Board Meetings (Virtual):
Board meetings are held virtually via Microsoft Teams, typically lasting no more than two hours.
Special Purpose Meetings (2-3 per year):
Additional meetings for strategy, budget approval, and the annual general meeting.
Annual In-Person Strategic Planning Session:
Once per year, members must attend a full-day strategic planning session followed by a social dinner with the leadership team (typically held in Edmonton or Calgary).
Committee Participation:
Members are expected to serve on at least one board committee (Finance and Audit, Governance and Nominating, Human Resources, Stakeholder Relations & Fund Development). Committees meet virtually four times per year, with meetings lasting approximately 60 minutes.
Overall Time Expectation:
Outside of the annual in-person strategic session, board members should expect to dedicate an average of 2-3 hours per month to board-related activities.
Board members may also be asked to attend events and advocate for Business Link Alberta’s mission within their networks.
COMPENSATION
This is a voluntary position; however, all out-of-pocket travel expenses (in accordance with Business Link Alberta’s Travel Policy) will be reimbursed.
Business Link Alberta is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors (Canada), and Board Members are eligible for reimbursement of expenses to attend approved webinars or training sessions to support their governance role.
