Process Engineer – Carbon Capture (Nuclear Sector)

The Process Engineer – Carbon Capture (Nuclear Sector) is responsible for the design, assessment, and optimisation of carbon capture processes associated with nuclear-enabled decarbonisation projects. This includes integration of carbon capture systems with nuclear power plants, SMRs, advanced reactors, and nuclear-supported industrial facilities (e.g. hydrogen, synthetic fuels, district heat, industrial CCS). The role operates within a highly regulated nuclear environment
, ensuring compliance with nuclear safety, quality, and assurance requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process Engineering & Design:
Develop process designs for CO₂ capture, conditioning, compression, and purification systems linked to nuclear facilities or nuclear-supported industrial processes.
  • Produce and review PFDs, P&IDs, heat and material balances
    , and process calculations.
  • Perform steady-state and dynamic simulations using recognised process modelling tools (e.g. Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS).
  • Support selection and adaptation of capture technologies (amine-based, advanced solvents, membranes, hybrid systems) suitable for nuclear integration.
Nuclear Integration & Interfaces
  • Assess and manage interfaces between nuclear systems and balance-of-plant (BoP) carbon capture facilities.
  • Support integration with SMRs or advanced reactors providing low-carbon electricity and/or heat to CCS or CCUS processes.
  • Ensure process designs align with nuclear operational constraints, availability targets, and outage philosophies.
Safety, Quality & Regulatory Compliance
  • Apply nuclear safety culture
, quality assurance, and configuration management principles to process engineering activities.
  • Support HAZID, HAZOP, ALARP assessments
, and nuclear safety case inputs where required.
  • Ensure compliance with nuclear regulations, environmental permitting, and international standards (e.g. ONR, IAEA, ISO, ASME as applicable).
  • Prepare and review process documentation suitable for regulatory submission and audit
    .
Project Delivery & Studies
  • Contribute to concept, feasibility, pre-FEED, FEED, and detailed design phases within nuclear project frameworks.
  • Provide technical input to CAPEX/OPEX estimates
    , schedules, and risk registers.
  • Support technology maturity assessments (TRL) and demonstration project development.
Operational & Lifecycle Support
  • Support commissioning, start-up, and performance testing of CCS systems associated with nuclear facilities.
  • Assist with operability, maintainability, and lifecycle optimisation
, including long-term nuclear plant operation considerations.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and lessons-learned processes.
Required Qualifications Education
  • Degree (BSc, MSc, or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering
, or a closely related discipline.
Experience
  • Typically 5–12+ years of relevant process engineering experience (level dependent).
  • Experience working on nuclear, highly regulated energy, or safety-critical infrastructure projects
    .
  • Practical experience with carbon capture, gas processing, or separation technologies
    .
Technical Skills
  • Strong grounding in thermodynamics, mass transfer, heat transfer, and process control
    .
  • Proficiency in process simulation and design tools
    .
  • Understanding of nuclear project life cycles
, safety case development, and quality assurance processes.
  • Familiarity with CO₂ compression, dehydration, and export systems is advantageous.
  • Strong commitment to nuclear safety culture and procedural compliance.
  • Ability to operate effectively in multi-disciplinary nuclear project teams
    .
  • High standard of technical documentation and traceability.
  • Clear, structured technical communication with regulators and stakeholders.
Typical Deliverables
  • Nuclear-grade process calculations and simulations
  • PFDs, P&IDs, and interface documentation
  • Safety study inputs and regulatory-ready process descriptions
  • Technical contributions to nuclear design substantiation and assurance processes
