Overview

SUMMARY: We are looking for a skilled Garage Craftsman to maintain and repair vehicles. You will be responsible for troubleshooting issues and fixing them with the result aiming for maximum reliability and functionality. The candidate should have good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. He or she should be well-versed in complex mechanical and/or electronic systems of vehicles and have excellent problem-solving abilities.

The ability to read manuals and technical documents is necessary. He or she must also be a good communicator to provide advice to Monrovia Craftsmen regarding care and upkeep of their vehicles.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform diagnostic evaluation and repairs on vehicles, tractors, lawn mowers and other motorized equipment. Types of vehicles will include all of Monrovia’s vehicle fleet. Gasoline powered examples – leaf blowers, pickups, vans, medium sized trucks. Diesel powered equipment examples – tractors, loaders and large “heavy” equipment.
  • Inspect vehicle engine and mechanical/electrical components to diagnose issues accurately
  • Inspect vehicle computer and electronic systems to repair, maintain and upgrade
  • Conduct routine maintenance work (replacing fluids, lubricating parts, etc.) aiming to vehicle functionality and longevity
  • Schedule future maintenance sessions and advise motorists on good vehicle use
  • Repair or replace broken or dysfunctional parts and fix issues (e.g. leaks)
  • Provide accurate estimates (cost, time, effort) for a repair or maintenance job
  • Keep logs on work and issues to submit to vehicle record software
  • Maintain equipment and tools in good condition
  • Disassemble, inspect, and replace worn or defective parts
  • Test repaired equipment for proper operation by test drive or operation of unit before returning to operators
  • Frequently involves heavy lifting, pulling, or working in awkward positions or lying on back on auto mechanic’s creeper, working beneath vessels
  • Other duties as assigned to meet departmental
Qualifications and Competencies
  • Have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, engines, brakes, drivetrain, fuel systems, suspension/steering, hydraulics, and air systems.
  • Working knowledge of vehicle diagnostic systems and methods
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and experience using auto mechanic tools.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Candidates should be able to take initiative with minimal direction and be flexible regarding the immediate needs of the department.
  • Good basic math skills to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to read technical manuals.
  • Proven experience as auto mechanic
  • Ability to handle various tools (e.g. pliers, wrenches) and heavy equipment (e.g. lift)
  • Willingness to observe all safety precautions for protections against accidents, dangerous fluids, chemicals etc.
  • Excellent physical condition
  • High school diploma is preferred;
    Certification from a vocational school or completion of apprenticeship is preferred
  • Valid certification (e.g. ASE) is a definite plus.
  • Must have some knowledge of computer.
Required Physical Skills
  • Experience working in agriculture is a plus
  • Able to lift minimum of 50 pounds repeatedly and 70+ pounds occasionally
  • Able to perform repetitive movements and tasks for 8, 10, or more hours per day which include but are not limited to squatting, bending, reaching, pulling, pushing, standing, walking, and lifting over the shoulders
  • Must be flexible to work in a team environment and be supportive of co-workers and coaches
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather conditions (hot, cold, and rainy)
