Position SummaryTo provide, as a member of the Counseling Department, a comprehensive counseling program for elementary students and specifically provide activities to meet the needs of the assigned caseload. The Counselor will consult with teachers, staff and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students; and provide support to other educational programs.
Essential Tasks And Responsibilities- Provide services to students through individual counseling to assist them in understanding themselves in the contexts within which they live home, school, community
- Counsel small groups and individual students and refer severe concerns to the appropriate resources
- Consult with teachers, staff and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of students
- Work with staff on evaluating and revising the building counseling program if needed
- Conduct counseling activities in the classroom in conjunction with administration and teachers
- Consult with teachers to facilitate the infusion of counseling activities into the regular education curriculum
- Counsel/guide students and parents in use of test results for educational planning
- Respond to crisis situations when appropriate
- Assist in student assessments and evaluations
- Maintain student records and protects their confidentiality
- Work to discover and develop special abilities of students
- Work with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to home and family, health, and emotional adjustment
- Confer with parents whenever necessary
- Provide training on counseling topics for faculty and parents
- Assist in the orientation of students new to the school
- Provide leadership in coordination of the total counseling program through continued planning and cooperative work with the entire staff
- Coordinate student groups as assigned (peer helpers, ambassadors, etc.)
- Network with social workers to provide for basic needs of students
- Communicate regularly with various internal and external entities to develop and maintain a positive school/community relationship
- Assist with state and district tests
- Collaborate with district counseling team
- Adhere to all policies of the District and the Code of Ethics for School Counselors
- Perform other related tasks as assigned by the building administrator and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding the education of students
- Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed
- Ability to organize and coordinate work
- Ability to communicate effectively both in oral and written form with students, parents and stakeholders
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to counseling program
- Ability to plan and implement individual and group lessons based on district and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned
- Ability to use appropriate language and accompanying techniques with students on a one-to-one basis as well as in groups
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, staff, and stakeholders
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, teachers, administrators, parents, and the general public
- Ability to travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as needed
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work
- Must have Guidance and Counseling P-8 or K-12 endorsement on teaching license
